BB&E is seeking a full-time Structural Engineer to support Naval Facilities Engineering Systems Command Europe, Africa, Central (NAVFAC EURAFCENT). The position will be based primarily on-site at Naval Support Activity Naples in Capodichino, Italy, with periodic travel to NSA Bahrain and other locations within the EURAFCENT area of responsibility.
Job Duties & Responsibilities
Provide independent, timely, and professional structural engineering support and consultation for the planning, design, construction, and maintenance of Navy, Marine Corps, and other supported-command facilities
Support military construction, special projects, demolition, maintenance, space-utilization, renovation, and facilities-development requirements
Calculate environmental and blast loads and analyze and design vertical and lateral force-resisting systems
Analyze and design shallow and deep foundations, retaining structures, utility supports, and structural elements using concrete, steel, and timber
Prepare and review structural calculations, design drawings, specifications, Requests for Proposals, and other technical documentation
Review structural design submittals and provide comments at established project milestones, including 35%, 65%, and 100% design stages
Participate in project conferences and collaborate with architects, engineers, planners, project managers, and other stakeholders to ensure interdisciplinary coordination
Apply DoD and Navy criteria, guide specifications, policies, industry codes, and standard practices to structural engineering designs
Prepare written analyses, consolidate technical findings, evaluate recommendations, and present proposed designs and study results
Support project budgeting, planning, and management; coordinate the work of others; lead teams as required; and comply with all safety and personal protective equipment requirements
Structural Design: Broad professional knowledge and practical application of civil and structural engineering concepts, theories, principles, practices, and techniques for shore-based facilities
Building Systems: Experience with vertical and lateral force-resisting systems, shallow and deep foundations, retaining structures, utility supports, and structural elements constructed of concrete, steel, and timber
Codes and Criteria: Knowledge of the International Building Code, ASCE 7, DoD and Navy guide specifications, design criteria, policies, and standard practices
Regulatory Knowledge: Knowledge of applicable local, state, federal, and foreign-country laws, codes, and statutory requirements affecting structural engineering design throughout the NAVFAC EURAFCENT area of responsibility
Interdisciplinary Coordination: Knowledge of related architectural and engineering disciplines and their impacts on structural engineering design
Communication: Ability to prepare clear written analyses, consolidate findings, evaluate recommendations, and deliver oral presentations of proposed designs and study results
Project Leadership: Knowledge of budgeting, planning, and project-management techniques, including the ability to coordinate the work of others and lead teams
Citizenship and Access: Must be a U.
S. citizen and able to obtain and maintain the background investigation, security eligibility, Common Access Card, and installation access required for the assignment Travel: Valid driver's license and willingness and ability to work on site in Naples, Italy, and travel periodically to NSA Bahrain and other required locations Experience & Education
Experience:
Minimum of five years of professional civil and structural engineering experience involving code-compliant facilities design for new construction and renovation projects
Education:
Bachelor's or master's degree in Civil Engineering from an ABET-accredited program, with an emphasis in Structural Engineering; Professional Engineer registration in civil or structural engineering is preferred Physical Requirements and Work Environment The physical demands and work environment may vary based on the position, assigned duties, and work location.
