Offer Description The project aims to address the following question: Zenobia enjoyed widespread support amongst the upper ranks of Palmyren society in her quest for pre-eminence and regional status. This must have reflected a strong political ambition and a consensus amongst Palmyra's most prominent citizens, and may well have provided Zenobia with the appropriate high-ranking social background to assume the role she did. How did Zenobia and her supporters secure the resources to fight effectively? How did Palmyra, an oasis city on the fringes of the Roman Empire, possess the military and financial strength to play a part in the armed conflict between the two warring empires, Rome and Persia, which dominated the middle decades of the 3rd century?
