This position offers a unique opportunity to assist in overseeing the District’s 15‑county maintenance program, project development, and pavement preservation program. ResponsibilitiesAssists in the development, preparation, and letting of maintenance contracts for the district. Drives/travels to project/work locations to make on‑site engineering reviews, analyses, tests, and provide technical support. Makes presentations and represents TxDOT. Performs and/or coordinates the review and processing of Plans, Specifications & Estimates (PS&E) submission, special specifications or provisions. Performs engineering analysis of statewide pavement conditions and develops reports. Performs engineering design work such as developing layouts, sketches, plans, specifications, estimates and contracts. Provides assistance in preparing reports on pavement conditions. Other job responsibilities as assigned. Coordinates with Area Engineers and reviews area office contract submissions (Transportation Engineer II). Trains engineering staff (Transportation Engineer II). Analyzes and recommends approval for modifications to highway maintenance contracts (Transportation Engineer II).QualificationsEducation: Bachelor’s degree in engineering or related science; a higher degree is accepted by TX PELS. Experience: Transportation Engineer I – 4 years; Transportation Engineer II – 5 years. Experience must be in engineering, transportation engineering, or engineering‑related fields. Related graduate-level education may substitute on a year‑per‑year basis. Licenses and Certification: Valid driver’s license (state vehicle required), Safety Impact Certificate, Licensed Professional Engineer. Subject to extreme cold and heat; below 32 and above 100 degrees for more than one hour. Required to wear protective gear – respirator, hard hat, or other device. Light work: lift up to 20 lbs at a time and frequently lift or carry objects up to 10 lbs. Balancing – walking, standing, crouching on various surfaces without falling. Crouching – bending body downward and forward by bending leg(s) and spine. Standing – prolonged periods of time. Walking – moving on foot to accomplish tasks: long distance/from one work site to another. Fingering – picking, pinching, typing; working primarily with fingers rather than whole hand. Talking – expressing or exchanging ideas by spoken words. Hearing – perceive sound at normal speaking levels; receive information by oral communication. Close visual acuity – work includes data/figures; view a computer screen; extensive reading. Visual Acuity – operate motor vehicles or heavy equipment.Conditions of EmploymentThis job is physically demanding and will require a pre‑employment physical. Must pass a drug test before employment for Safety Impact positions; random drug testing applies. Doctoral level employees may be subject to standard regulations on medical marijuana. Must attend work regularly and observe approved work hours. Required to work weekends, holidays, and hours other than 8‑5. Required to wear personal protective equipment and comply with all safety requirements.Position Information Location: San Angelo District (smaller city, 100,000 population with friendly atmosphere). Work schedule: Monday‑Friday, 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. The position may require travel within the 15‑county maintenance program area. The Texas Department of Transportation reserves the right to determine the position level based on experience and skill. Transportation Engineer I (B24): $65,104 – $106,634 annually. Transportation Engineer II (B25): $69,572 – $114,099 annually.
