At Canonical, managers are expected to stay technical and close to the code, and our senior+ engineers lead and develop software projects, as well as the processes and people around them.Key teams that ship Ubuntu:Foundations : maintaining foundational software: architectures, package managers, compilers, toolchains, bootloaders, filesystems and core utilitiesServer : leading the design, evolution and future of our Ubuntu Server distributionDesktop : driving Ubuntu Desktop, our future immutable desktop: Ubuntu Core Desktop, WSL, gaming technology, and a suite of modern applications for the desktop crafted with FlutterDebcrafters : a new team responsible for the forward movement, maintenance and overall health of the Ubuntu archiveResponsibilitiesLead your team, helping them grow as engineers, do important work, and have a great timeDevelop and champion technical delivery, architecture, development and code reviewsPlan, estimate and execute high‑quality, performant software in Rust, Go and PythonCollaborate with product management to define the vision and strategy for UbuntuSet expectations with other engineering teams, senior management and external stakeholdersCoach, mentor and provide technical feedback, and facilitate career developmentContribute to upstream and neighboring open source projectsOptimize distribution for performance, reliability and securityDebug complex system‑level issues and deliver robust solutionsAuthor and improve technical and community documentationQualificationsExceptional academic track record from high school and universityUndergraduate degree in Computer Science or STEM, or a compelling narrative about an alternative pathAbility to drive and deliver technical work streams beyond expectationsLead and coach others to deliver exceptional engineering workDemonstrated passion for open source softwareSignificant experience with Rust, Go, Python, Flutter or C/C++Professional written and spoken EnglishExcellent communication and interpersonal skillsResult‑oriented with a personal drive to meet commitmentsAbility to travel twice a year for company events up to two weeks eachNice‑to‑have skillsExperience contributing to or leading open source projectsExperience with Linux distributions/distribution engineeringExperience with software packaging and distribution mechanismsPerformance or Security Engineering experienceLocation & Compensation We have remote roles open in every time zone. We consider geographical location, experience and performance in shaping compensation worldwide. We revisit compensation annually.
