Job ID: | Amazon Development Centre Italy SRL The Alexa AI Devices team is seeking a Senior Applied Scientist with a strong background in machine and deep learning to advance and deploy state‑of‑the‑art GenAI systems. In this role, you will collaborate with talented peers to create scalable solutions for an innovative conversational assistant, aiming to revolutionize user experiences for millions of Alexa customers. You will work to bridge research and innovation with production deployment of high‑efficiency services supporting high‑throughput traffic. Creating reliable, scalable, and high‑performance products requires exceptional technical expertise and a sound understanding of Machine Learning, NLP, LLM fundamentals, and problem‑solving approaches. This role involves close collaboration with business partners, engineering teams, and fellow scientists within the team and across Amazon to raise the bar in operational excellence, improving tools and automating workflows. You will lead high‑visibility, high‑impact programs in partnership with various teams across the company. The ideal candidate is self‑motivated, thrives in ambiguous and fast‑paced environments, possesses the drive to tackle complex challenges, and excels at swiftly delivering impactful solutions while iterating based on user feedback. You will inspire and lead other scientists in pushing the boundaries of scientific innovation in the field, fostering a culture of excellence and breakthrough research. Key job responsibilities Research, develop, and implement real‑time AI services that advance the state of the art in GenAI Conduct comprehensive analysis of algorithms, methodologies, and experimental findings to drive innovation Create reliable, efficient, and effective code for production systems while maintaining high standards of software engineering excellence and operational reliability Partner with cross‑functional teams to architect and execute technically rigorous AI projects Adapt quickly to evolving technical requirements and deadlines in a dynamic environment Communicate technical concepts effectively across teams through both written and verbal channels Contribute to research publications in internal and external top venues Support on‑call activities for critical systems as needed A day in the life As a Senior Applied Scientist, you will own the design and development of end‑to‑end systems. You’ll have the opportunity to write technical white papers, create technical roadmaps and drive production level projects that will support Amazon Science. You will have the opportunity to design new algorithms, models, or other technical solutions whilst experiencing Amazon’s customer focused culture. The ideal scientist must have the ability to work with diverse groups of people and cross‑functional teams to solve complex business problems. Basic Qualifications PhD in engineering, technology, computer science, machine learning, robotics, operations research, statistics, mathematics or equivalent quantitative field Experience programming in Java, C++, Python or related language Experience with neural deep learning methods and machine learning Experience in building machine learning models for business application Experience with modeling tools such as R, scikit‑learn, Spark MLLib, MxNet, Tensorflow, numpy, scipy etc. Preferred Qualifications Publications at top‑tier peer‑reviewed conferences or journals Experience in GenAI production systems development Experience leading/coaching junior scientists Amazon is an equal opportunities employer.
