Turbopump Development Engineer (High-Thrust Rocket Engine) Join us as Turbopump Development Engineer for our High‑Thrust Rocket Engine program at The Exploration Company.Here at The Exploration Company we are developing, producing, and operating Nyx, a modular and reusable space orbital vehicle that can eventually be refuelled in orbit and that can carry cargo – and potentially humans in the longer run. As a key member of our engineering team, you will be responsible for designing, analyzing, and optimizing turbopump components for rocket engines, with a focus on liquid oxygen pumps.Key ResponsibilitiesMaking and documenting well‑reasoned consequential decisions in turbomachinery designCarrying out the mechanical design of cryogenic pump components and assemblies based on specifications and best practicesSupervision of external subcontractors and communication with suppliersDesign of test apparatus, definition of test objectives and analysis of test resultsAnalytical modeling of geometric, mechanical or fluidic problems and implementing solutions in programsWhat We Would Love To See From YouMaster’s degree or higher in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering or a related technical discipline; alternatively a bachelor’s degree with substantial relevant experienceStrong fundamentals in fluid mechanics, thermodynamics and mechanical designGood understanding of industry standard and emerging manufacturing methods and their constraintsProficient in the use of 3D CAD software and draftingExperience writing software/scripts in languages such as PythonAbility to infer system‑level implications of component design choicesStrong ability to work in close collaboration with othersStrong oral and written communication skillsStrong analysis and problem‑solving skillsStrong research skills and ability to infer useful information from partial or contradictory sourcesDrive towards excellence coupled with ability to work within time constraintsProficiency in organization and prioritization of tasksFluency in EnglishDesirableSome understanding of machine dynamics such as rotordynamicsStrong understanding of liquid‑propellant rocket engines as a systemProven experience working with any kind of fast rotating machineryHands‑on experience developing hardware from concept to working prototypesWhy you should join usWe’re Agile – we make decisions fast while keeping our goals and systems in mindWe’re Open and Collaborative – we are transparent about risks and obstacles so we can cooperate to overcome themWe have a lot of Fun – we refuel our energy knowing we are democratizing space.
