Overview We are seeking a passionate and talented signal processing and acoustic analyst Scientist to support the program of work in developing and investigating innovative and cutting-edge scientific research. 1. POST CONTEXT This is a position within the Centre for Maritime Research and Experimentation (CMRE) an organization of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO). CMRE is an established world‑class scientific research and experimentation facility that organizes and conducts scientific research and technology development centred on the maritime domain delivering innovative and field‑tested Science & Technology (S&T) solutions to address defence and security needs of the Alliance. The position is within the Research Division (RD) which is responsible for identifying, developing and delivering Science & Technology (S&T) solutions to the needs of the Alliance in the maritime domain. The Division leads the development of CMRE's scientific strategy and through its capability in ocean sensing, numerical modelling, big data analytics, artificial intelligence and autonomy delivers the Centre's S&T goals while maintaining CMRE's reputation within the scientific community. The Research Division is comprised of the following branches: Antisubmarine Warfare (ASW) Autonomous Naval Mine Warfare (ANMW) Environmental Knowledge and Operational Effectiveness (EKOE) & Climate Change (CC) Data Knowledge and Operational Effectiveness (DKOE) Maritime Unmanned Systems Enablers (MUSE) This signal processing and acoustic analyst position is within the ASW Branch and contributes to the projects Maritime Unmanned Systems for ASW within the Autonomous Anti‑Submarine Warfare (AASW) program. Responsibilities Supports the program of work in conducting and developing innovative and cutting‑edge scientific research in the area of Signal Processing, Data Analysis and Underwater Acoustics to provide a thorough scientific understanding and to develop autonomous capabilities for ASW. Contributes to the ASW program of work at the Centre helping to re‑establish the laboratory as a centre of excellence in at‑sea research and experimentation. Executes CMRE's research activities in signal processing supporting the ASW program. Emphasis will be placed on signal processing algorithm design, prototype development and sea‑trial data analysis to improve scientific understanding of underwater sensing capabilities in areas of interest to ASW; and on supporting CMRE's sea trials and NATO exercises. Supports the organisation and execution of ACT Projects, externally funded projects and NATO workshops and conferences on ASW; the development of proposals for external funding beyond ACT, seeking and winning funding from National Naval R&D funding agencies, National or NATO Multi‑National projects or from European funding mechanisms. Works closely as required with projects outside of the ASW program, particularly with the EKOE projects to ensure coherence of the centre's environmental acoustics and ASW activities. Special Requirements and Additional Duties May be required to perform other related duties as directed and to perform duties onboard Centre or chartered vessels, as well as TDY assignments within and outside NATO boundaries. Must hold a fit‑for‑sea certificate in line with IMO and ILO standards before taking up duty. Essential Qualifications Scientific expertise in mathematics, physics or engineering or equivalent. Solid knowledge of developing signal‑ and data‑processing algorithms, testing and validating approaches on data collected during scientific experimentation or operational exercises. Strong background in signal / array processing (beamforming, space‑time adaptive processing, field data analysis). Proven track record of high‑quality scientific research in signal processing with a significant publication record. Strong scientific programming skills using standard software and operating systems such as Linux, MATLAB, Octave, Python, C/C++, FORTRAN. Experience participating in scientific project work within a multi‑disciplinary environment. Experience participating in the submission and execution of scientific projects delivering the expected outputs to the satisfaction of the customer. MSc degree in physics, applied mathematics, engineering or related field and at least 5 years post‑MSc experience as Scientist or Engineer with a focus on mathematics, physics or signal processing. OR PhD in physics, applied mathematics, engineering or related field with training in signal processing and at least 2 years of relevant experience. A thorough knowledge of one of the two NATO languages, both written and spoken, is essential and some knowledge of the other is desirable (English SLP 3333). Most of the work at CMRE is conducted in English. Desirable Qualifications Ph.D. or relevant experience in physics, applied mathematics, engineering or related field with a specific focus on signal processing and/or acoustic data analysis. Demonstrated experience on seismo‑acoustic field data processing, distributed acoustic sensing (DAS) and/or inversion techniques. Knowledge of numerical modelling, governing equations, and numerical solution techniques used in the signal processing and underwater acoustic communities. Experience as Principal Investigator for scientific projects in the signal processing domain. Recent scientific publications as first author in acoustics or signal processing. Experience working in an international organisation. Demonstrated capability to obtain funding for new research activities and satisfy customer requirements and expectations. Attributes / Competencies Excellent communication skills, oral and written, able to communicate at all levels. Very good interpersonal skills, soliciting input and encouraging others. Innovative and driven, always displaying sound judgement. Excellent time management and organisational skills. Remarks The duties are performed in an office laboratory workshop environment or on‑board Centre ships. Slightly undesirable working conditions may apply. Benefits and Compensation Salary: 5,725.22 EUR monthly (subject to future adjustments in accordance with North Atlantic Council decisions). Grade: ABCL grade A2 / NATO grade G15. Research facility located at the sea port of La Spezia, Italy, with two specialised research vessels. Expatriate package including allowances, supplements and insurances, generous annual leave and eligible home leave. Contract: three years definite duration, renewable for subsequent periods based on performance and organisational needs.
