We were meant to fly.Job DescriptionThe gas turbine flow path preliminary design engineer is an exciting opportunity to invent the future of flight developing new propulsion system architectures and technologies. The responsibilities of the role cover the design and analysis for the definition of the flow path for engines early in their design cycle. In this role you will join the Preliminary Design team within the Advanced Technology Operations section at Avio Aero.Essential ResponsibilitiesExecute the preliminary flow path sizing and design of advanced propulsion systems and componentsCreate and evaluate different aerothermal cycles and components arrangements with inputs from a cross‑functional teamDefine the preliminary sizing of the main gas path turbomachinery components considering inputs from cycles and mechanical systems and structures configuration using different techniques (from hand calculations to internal automation tools)Perform architecture feasibility studies and design exploration studies to define gas turbine engine architecture configurationContribute to the capability development within the team for multi‑physics and multi‑objective systems designIntegrate individual component elements into a larger system design considering the functional constraints (e.g. mechanical, electrical, thermal, aero, clearances, etc.)Interface with aero, thermal and systems competences ensuring the completeness and level of detail from each of them is adequate to the preliminary design phasePlanning and continued reporting of own tasks work to be accomplished, providing visibility on methods and results, and managing schedule for the mechanical effortsSupport internal and external customer data requests, ensuring proper documentation of all workQualifications / RequirementsMaster’s degree in aerospace or mechanical engineeringSignificant experience on gas turbine turbomachinery sizing and overall engine architecture definition and simulationExperienced in aerothermal gas turbine engine cycle analysis and simulationExperienced on the definition and evaluation of engine layouts, feasibility checks, and trade studies of early engine concepts at engine and/or module levelExperience with numerical methods for analysis and preliminary sizing of turbomachinery and the evaluation of key metrics from compressor, turbine or combustor modules impacting the architectureUnderstanding of whole engine architecture trades impact into final system weight and installationDemonstrated experience with programming tools and languagesAbility to critically analyze results and derive technical conclusions to clearly drive communication of resultsFamiliarity with Research and Technology development processesFluent in Italian and EnglishWork Visa, in accordance with local regulation, is requiredDesired CharacteristicsFamiliar with various engine types and disciplines, able to apply different design approaches to new designs where appropriateExperience with different gas turbine types and applications (fixed wing, rotary, ...)Basic knowledge of CAD modelingCan do attitude capable to manage uncertainty and changing environmentsExperience working with cross‑functional teams in a multinational environmentWhat we offerSmart working and work life‑balanceAvio Aero, when possible, promotes smart work in hybrid mode, and encourages a good, healthy and satisfying work‑life balance.
