Based in Asia and part of Booking Holdings, we have a diverse, globally distributed team that fosters collaboration and innovation. The Opportunity In Agoda’s Back End Engineering department, we build scalable, fault-tolerant systems and APIs that host our core business logic. Our systems cover inventory and pricing, product information, customer data, communications, partner data, booking systems, payments, and more. We deploy dozens of releases per day and use CI/CD and testing techniques to ensure uptime. We use technologies such as Scala, Go, Kafka, Aerospike, and agile development practices. The Engineering Manager role is highly hands-on and leadership-focused, guiding one or more engineering teams. In this Role, you'll get to Be hands on — write and review code, and provide expert coaching and guidance to engineers. Maintain a love of engineering and a passion for building elegant, scalable systems; contribute to architectural decisions and system maintenance. Do full stack engineering across infrastructure, client side, back end, performance, data, and related areas. Develop people — inspire and grow team members, integrate new A-players, and foster ownership and accountability. What you'll Need to Succeed Extremely proficient in at least one programming language (Java, Scala, C#). Strong experience in systems architecture for complex, scalable, fault-tolerant distributed systems. Demonstrable experience as a system owner with operational responsibility. Proficiency in lower-level engineering (garbage collection, context switching, threading). DevOps culture — agility, leanness, automation, CI/CD. Good understanding of application security. Passionate about technology and the Internet. Experience working in a successful agile development team. Experience running engineering teams with 5+ direct reports. Ability to operate autonomously: make decisions, set KPIs, with a strong sense of ownership. Data-driven decision making. Nice to Have Proficiency in more than one programming language.
