The mission of the Centre for Religious Studies (ISR) is to conduct research of the highest quality and to promote frontier studies on religion and ethics, on the sole basis of scientific excellence, with the aim of contributing to the persistence of religion as an inspiring matrix of values to promote peace, provide freedom, achieve sustainable development, combat social exclusion and discrimination, and respect cultural diversity.

The Centre focuses on a few key areas of contemporary religious studies in order to respond to the social demand for knowledge on religion and ethics, map its role in cultural and social transformations, exert an assessable positive impact on major religious and ethical challenges, and adopt a long-term sustainability strategy based on the accumulation of research and impact.

Job Description

Main Tasks:

The resource will be responsible for qualitative research activities in the field of education and youth—data collection and analysis—foreseen by the two projects: SPARKLE (STEM Practical Activities to Raise Knowledge Learning and Exploration), focused on educating young people about digital technologies and AI, and Back to School, aimed at exploring the citizenship pathways of second- and third-generation individuals in certain Italian regions.

The SPARKLE project, coordinated by FB-IRVAPP, involves collaboration between FBK-ISR and the FBK-AI center in defining and implementing the multidisciplinary training and learning interactive tools related to AI and its ethical and social impacts. For the Sparkle project, the successful candidate will participate in these activities in full operational autonomy and in coordination with the FBK-ISR scientific supervisor and the FBK-AI team.

Back to School is a project promoted and developed jointly by Save the Children Italy and FBK-ISR through a collaboration agreement. It involves research activities on the socio-educational inclusion of minors with migrant backgrounds in some Italian areas. For this project, the successful candidate is expected to plan and carry out, in coordination with the FBK-ISR scientific supervisor and the Save the Children team, field visits and research activities through interviews and focus groups in school and non-school settings.

In both projects, the resource will participate in management activities and in the dissemination of results. Additionally, the resource will actively take part in the regular activities of FBK-ISR (meetings, seminars, and discussions internal to the Center in and collaboration with other FBK centers and external partners).

The ideal candidate should have:

  • Master's Degree in sociology, anthropology, pedagogy or other pertinent subjects with an expertise in the study of youth, inclusion, education to AI ethics and critical thinking;
  • Experience in conducting qualitative research, mainly recurring to direct observation, interviews and focus group, possibly in educational environments;
  • Experience in teachers' training programmes and educational activities;
  • Proven capacity to disseminate research in international, top-tier peer-reviewed journals;
  • Good written and spoken in English (At least B2);
  • Excellent knowledge of Italian (At least C1);
  • Strong execution skills (proactivity, time management, problem-solving);
  • Good interpersonal skills (teamwork);

Preferred

  • PhD in sociology, anthropology, pedagogy;

Employment:

Type of contract: fixed term contract;

Work time: part-time 55% (21 h per week);

Gross annual salary: about € 38.500. Compensation to be adjusted proportionally to the hours worked.

Start date: Indicatively April or May 2025;

Duration: 12 months;

Work Place: Trento (Italy).
