Organizational context: The United Nations Interregional Crime and Justice Research Institute (UNICRI) is a UN entity focused on crime prevention and criminal justice. Its Cybercrime and Online Harms workstream addresses evolving digital threats. This role supports the "Checkpoint Reached" project, focusing on gaming and online harms, and contributes to research, policy, and programming within this broader workstream.
Job purpose: This role is designed to support UNICRI's "Checkpoint Reached" project and advance its initiatives concerning gaming and online harms. The incumbent will contribute to building a stronger evidence base, fostering stakeholder engagement, disseminating knowledge, and developing future research and programming within the Cybercrime and Online Harms workstream. The position aims to deepen the understanding of online gaming environments and their intersection with exploitation, abuse, cybercrime, violent behavior, and extremism, with a particular focus on protecting children and young people. The role will involve research, analysis, and contributing to policy development and program implementation to mitigate online harms and promote positive digital behaviors.
Responsibilities:
The Senior Fellow will support the implementation of the "Checkpoint Reached" project, including its Game Jam component, through research, stakeholder engagement, and knowledge dissemination. Key duties involve conducting research and analysis on gaming and online harms, examining their links to terrorism, extremism, exploitation, abuse, and cybercrime. The role requires researching the potential of games to foster pro-social behavior and digital resilience. Additionally, the incumbent will map and engage with relevant stakeholders, including industry, government, civil society, and international organizations. Responsibilities also include preparing reports, briefing notes, and other analytical products, identifying research gaps, and performing related tasks as assigned by the supervisor.
Education:
An Advanced University degree (Master's or equivalent) in a relevant field such as law, political science, international relations, security studies, criminology, cybersecurity, or public policy is required. A first-level university degree with two additional years of relevant experience may be accepted. Fluency in English is required.
Work
experience:
A minimum of 10 years of professional experience in research, policy analysis, program development, or project implementation within crime prevention, criminal justice, rule of law, or human rights is required. Experience in cybercrime, online harms, gaming environments, or related digital issues is essential. Experience working with communities, conducting research, and preparing analytical outputs is desirable.
