**Job Description**:
The New York Times is seeking a talented, experienced and versatile journalist to join our International team as the bureau chief for Rome, an anchor of our coverage in Southern Europe.
This is a chance to join a committed team of reporters and editors who have a history of award-winning work, an eagerness to experiment with new and developing story forms, and a passion for bringing Times journalism to a global audience across digital, print and other media.
For this role, we are looking for a bureau chief who proactively sets the news agenda for coverage of breaking and unfolding events in Italy and other European countries. The bureau chief delivers the big swing pieces that tell readers why a breaking news story is important, what it means for the country and, when relevant, can place it in a global perspective.
The role requires keen analytical skills to identify some of the main storylines and topics percolating in the region, including climate change, immigration and demographics, as well geopolitics and the broader society. As bureau chief, you will develop a network of sources that can help us deliver original and rich reporting with an emphasis on accountability journalism.
In addition, you will oversee the management of the bureau. This includes directing the news gathering activities of the bureau, fostering good communication among the team, supervising logistics and ensuring that we have a robust and up-to-date roster of stringers across the country that we can rely upon.
You will also partner with colleagues across Photo, Video, Audio and other departments to bring stories to life in a variety of formats across all NYT products.
Main Responsibilities:
- Cover live and breaking news, pursue enterprise and investigations in the region- Generate ideas on coverage including specific targets and broad themes- Write on deadline; receive and react to feedback and edits- Familiarity with audience tactics to reach new readers across platforms- Build and manage a network of reporters and translators for sourcing and reporting- Hire and manage staff in the bureau; provide direction and feedback to news assistants,- freelancers and the bureau manager; proactively ensure that the team is engaged, motivated and that there is regular communication- Collaborate with other reporters in the region during major news moments- Work with colleagues across Photo, Video, Audio and other departments to bring stories- to life in a variety of formats across all NYT products- Oversee bureau logistics and operations including leases, equipment, budget- reports and any monthly funding requests, approve payroll payments, scheduling / leave of absence requests and general maintenance- Proven strong international reporting and writing experience, preferably for a global news organization- Ability to juggle breaking news, smart analysis and ambitious enterprise- Leadership and management skills; willingness to grow- Proactive problem solver- Thrive in a fast-paced, deadline-oriented environment- Collegial and collaborative behavior; integrity with assignments- Commitment to The New York Times’s strategy, standards and mission
