We are seeking a bright, young scientist with some experience to join the Quality Control Ecosystem team supporting the activities in the frame of the Quality Assurance for Earth Observation (QA4EO) ESA project and other national and international Earth Observation Quality Control and R&D projects.
The post-holder will be involved in three main areas:
Supporting the Long Term and Heritage Missions service coordinator in the analysis and implementation of activities aiming to preserve and improve the quality of multi-mission data from satellites no more flying.

Supporting the activities focusing on the characterization of missions that may become part of ESA's Third Party Missions (TPM) programme, following internationally recognised standards of maturity, tailored for the specific purpose.
Supporting the analysis of satellite data taken on ground and not only, with the aim to design and then generate synergy products.

The Scientist will perform the following activities under the direction and guidance of the Work Package leader and Area Manager:

- Long Term and Heritage Missions:

- Support the definition of improvement proposals
- Support the definition of detailed implementation plans
- Liaison with consortium and external interface (ESA and other contractors) to drive the implementation of the plans
- Analysis of missions' data in support to technical and scientific investigations
- Potential TPM characterization:

- Analysis of quality and exhaustivity of mission's data and of the relative documentation
- Support the scientific liaison with Mission's owners
- Support the scientific organization, execution, and final report assembly of defined ESA's workshops
- Ground-based (GB) data synergy products:

- Analysis and understanding of existing GB data
- Support the scientific team in the definition of one potential synergy product
- Support the definition of an implementation roadmap
- Actively drive and perform all technical and scientific activities defined in the roadmap (with support of the rest of the team as defined in the plan)
- Actively drive and support the preparation of outreach material related to the new outcome
- General activities independent from the domain:

- Contribute to the writing of scientific papers and technical reports and preparation of scientific presentations at international conferences/workshops;
- Attendance at workshops/conferences
- Attendance al projects' meetings, and fulfilment of emerging actions

Mandatory requisites are:

- Exposure in handling and analysing EO data (satellite and ground-based);
- Some scientific programming skills aiming to automate data analysis activities (e.g., Python, IDL, R);
- Good oral and written communication;
- Experience in scientific publication and reporting (including oral presentations) of results;
- Good working proficiency in English.
- Attitude to follow guidelines and to require minimum supervision, proactively requesting help when needed.
- Ability to plan and report activities and to work to deadlines.
- Availability to travel to attend meetings.
- Willingness to perform duties in different scientific domains.

Applicants should have high self-motivation, the capability to work effectively in a team and autonomously, and excellent organizational skills. A solid, proactive attitude is required in identifying problems and proposing solutions.

Mandatory knowledge and experience requisites are:

- University degree, or equivalent, in physics, chemistry, engineering or mathematics.
- Exposure in handling and analysing EO data (satellite and ground-based)
- Capability to develop tools for the handling and analysis of large sets of data

Additional assets:

- Exposure to EO satellite or ground-based data retrieval algorithms
- Exposure to themes like uncertainties characterization, quality control, and calibration/validation of satellite-based or ground-based products
- Experience with past or current Earth Observation Satellite mission data, from ESA or other parties (including commercial);
- List of scientific publica
