About ATSILS - a leader in providing innovative, professional criminal, civil and family law services to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander clients throughout Queensland.

We are a 50-year-old not-for-profit organisation with 300 staff, including a specialist Through Care service to complement our legal services. We are fully government funded, and this role is tied to ongoing funding until at least June 2025.

Your Opportunity

You will have frequent opportunity to provide expert information directly to clients, and to external stakeholders about client matters. You can rely on the State-wide resources of the Principal Legal Officer and the Director of Law (Criminal Law), and your immediate legal team.

Selection Criteria: Essential

We require someone who:

  • aligns with our values and vision, and has an appreciation of and sensitivity to the challenges our clients face in their fight for and their right to justice and equity;
  • is admitted as a Legal Practitioner within the State of Queensland or holds a current Practising Certificate;
  • has capacity to provide high level client services in Criminal Law proceedings, while ensuring exemplary case management standards;
  • has proven experience in all aspects of Criminal Law – with both adult and youth jurisdictions; and knowledge of diversionary alternatives available to Police/Magistrates/Judges;
  • has an in-depth working knowledge of the Youth Justice Act 1992, (as amended) and the Criminal Code 1899, (as amended); and
  • is prepared to work after hours if necessary, and has sound interpersonal and communication skills.

Desirable Criteria

We would also like someone who:

  • can use Microsoft Office in a Windows networked environment;
  • has a current Queensland Driver Licence and is willing to travel by air and road for the role; and
  • is willing to undergo a Criminal Record Check to achieve a National Police Certificate (Australia-wide Disclosable Criminal History).

Salary and Benefits
