About Siciliamia and the Permaculture Internship

Siciliamia is a pioneering startup based in southern Sicily, dedicated to permaculture, villa rentals, and gastronomy that promote the social, economic, and ecological well-being of the region.

We are seeking a permaculture intern to collaborate with us in monitoring and developing an 18-hectare permaculture property in Ragusa, a UNESCO World Heritage site. This is an excellent opportunity for individuals with a background in permaculture, ecology, botany, horticulture, and related areas, who are committed to ecosystem health and restoration.

Job Description

As a permaculture intern, your responsibilities will include:

  • Establishing an ecosystem baseline by cataloging site flora and fauna, as well as the characteristics of desired plants.
  • Monitoring and recording ecosystem changes over time through observations of flora and fauna health, climatic data, and soil health metrics.
  • Participating in site design planning by researching native plant communities and sharing your observations and ideas.
  • Supporting on-ground development of the site by establishing critical supply sources, implementing windbreaks, food and timber forests, and agricultural plant communities.
  • Carrying out other project duties as needed.

This internship will take place in Ragusa and will last for 4-9 months, starting in September/October 2024. You will be based in beautiful Ragusa Ibla and will have the opportunity to work with an international, English-speaking team.

Requirements

To be considered for this internship, you must have:

  • An advanced level of spoken and written English. Knowledge of Italian and Sicilian language is a plus.
  • Experience in and/or completed coursework in ecosystem restoration, permaculture, syntropic farming, agro-forestry, regenerative farming, and/or related areas.
  • A love and curiosity about nature.
  • A proven track record and/or ability to demonstrate personal reliability and teamwork.
  • The ability to independently manage your time to complete work in a quality manner.
  • The ability to safely do fieldwork, including lifting up to 20 kilos.
  • Intermediate skills in using computers and office productivity software.
