Job Title: Economist (Food Security Early Warning)

Job Summary: We are seeking a highly skilled Economist to join our team in the Global Information and Early Warning System on Food and Agriculture (GIEWS) at the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO). The successful candidate will be responsible for monitoring and analyzing agricultural production trends and food security in developing countries.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Research and analyze data and statistics to provide technical, statistical, and policy-related information and analysis to support the delivery of economic and social development programs.
  • Produce a variety of technical reports and input for technical documents, divisional publications, and web pages.
  • Provide technical, statistical, and analytical services on various studies, projects, and assessments, and provide technical backstopping to field projects.
  • Participate in the development of improved or updated technical, statistical, and analytical tools, methodologies, systems, databases, and key social, economic, environmental, nutritional, and early warning indicators.
  • Participate in multi-disciplinary teams, collaborate with other divisions/offices/centres on work groups and committees, and promote best practices.
  • Collaborate in capacity development activities involving the planning and organizing of training workshops, seminars, and major meetings, and the preparation of related information, materials, online tools, and information kits.
  • Promote knowledge sharing and best practices at international meetings and conferences, and influence partners in stakeholder consultations.
  • Participate in resource mobilization activities.

Requirements:

  • Advanced university degree in economics, agricultural economics, or a related field.
  • Five years of relevant experience in economic analysis of agriculture and food security in developing countries.
  • Working knowledge (proficient - level C) of English and limited knowledge (intermediate - level B) of another FAO official language (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian, or Spanish).

Technical/Functional Skills:

  • Work experience in more than one location or area of work, particularly in field positions, is desirable.
  • Extent and relevance of experience in monitoring and analyzing agricultural production trends and food security in developing countries.
  • Extent and relevance of experience in conducting quantitative economic analysis of food production, consumption, stocks, trade, prices, and policies of food commodities.
  • Extent and relevance of experience in conducting crop and food security assessments in developing countries.
  • Extent and relevance of experience in contributing to and coordinating multi-institutional global food security analysis.
  • Depth of familiarity with existing information and early warning systems on food and agriculture.
  • Ability and experience in using satellite-based data and other digital tools for monitoring crop production is desirable.
  • Work experience in an international environment, especially at field level in developing countries, would be an asset.
  • Demonstrated ability to write clearly and concisely and to work under strict deadlines.
  • Experience in developing projects and in resource mobilization.
