About the Role
Cmcc - Centro Euro-Mediterraneo Sui Cambiamenti Climatici is seeking a talented Junior Software Developer to support the division activities on large-scale data management in the field of climate sciences. The successful candidate will be responsible for designing, developing, and deploying data management solutions and services for climate/environmental Big Data.

Responsibilities
The Junior Software Developer will be responsible for designing, development, integration, and deployment of large-scale climate/environmental data management services and workflows in cloud-based or HPC infrastructures. Additionally, the candidate will evaluate and develop software solutions and novel strategies for handling and analyzing climate/environmental data. The role also involves drafting of scientific reports and technical documentation related to the developed solutions.

Requirements
The ideal candidate will hold a M.Sc. degree in Computer Science or Computer Engineering or equivalent fields. Demonstrated experience in programming with Python and knowledge of Python scientific libraries and tools (i.e., numpy, pandas, Jupyter notebooks) is required. Good knowledge of data management systems and DBMS design, experience with version control system tools (i.e., Git/GitHub), and relevant experience with containerization (i.e., Docker) and orchestration solutions (e.g., Kubernetes) are also necessary. Additionally, the candidate should have demonstrated experience with Linux environment and software setup configuration, flexibility to work on a diverse range of tasks, and ability to manage deadlines. Fluency in both written and spoken English language is also required.

Additional Skills
The successful candidate will also have knowledge of Object-Oriented design and programming, experience with bash scripting, and knowledge of cloud and HPC environments and architectures. Additionally, experience with NetCDF data formats and related Python libraries (e.g., xarray, cartopy), and/or cloud-based formats (e.g., Zarr) is desirable. Knowledge of Python-based data analytics and Machine learning frameworks (e.g., Dask, PyTorch, MLFlow) and data cataloguing tools (e.g., intake, STAC) is also an asset. The candidate should also have experience in managing data processing/analytics workflow and in handling large datasets, as well as ability to work in a team and independently.

Benefits
The appointment period will be initially of 12 months starting from December 2024, renewable pending a positive evaluation. The gross annual salary range will be based on qualification and working experience and competitive with major research centers in Europe. A welfare package, flexible working time as per internal policies, and support during the immigration process, if needed, are also offered.
