Reporting Structure

The chosen candidate will operate under the direct guidance of the Technical Adviser for Geospatial within the Agrifood Economics and Policy Division (ESA), collaborating closely with the Data Lab, CSI, and various technical divisions that utilize geospatial information.

Technical Emphasis

Provision of expert assistance in the creation of agricultural type maps and yield estimation maps at the national scale, which includes (i) executing the EOSTAT initiative in selected nations, focusing on: i) installation and upkeep of the Sen2Agri toolbox deployed on cloud or local servers, ii) crafting algorithms for the categorization of crops and land cover using optical and SAR data, iii) employing both pixel-based and object-based methodologies, iv) establishing data pipelines in commonly utilized cloud platforms (Google, AWS, Sentinel Hub), v) developing web applications, and vi) aiding in the formation of Geospatial Data Science educational programs.

Responsibilities and Duties


• Process Earth Observation (EO) time series and create regularized EO data cubes.

• Access and utilize both Optical and SAR data, at high and very high resolution from diverse sources.

• Identify phenological, spectral, and texture indicators for monitoring land cover and land use, with an emphasis on crop types.

• Evaluate crop yield using EO data alongside in situ data, employing both statistical and physical-based models (e.g., DSSAT, SALUS, etc.).

• Develop and implement ML and AI classification algorithms, utilizing both pixel and object analysis techniques.

• Determine and analyze data requirements for national crop type mapping and the extraction of agricultural statistics.

• Validate map products for location accuracy and area statistics bias.

• API Integration: Integrate and utilize common EO data APIs such as Sentinel Hub, AWS Earth, Google Earth Engine, and OPENEO to access satellite imagery, environmental datasets, and ancillary data.

CANDIDATES WILL BE EVALUATED BASED ON THE FOLLOWING

Minimum Qualifications


• Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science, Data Science, Informatics, or related disciplines;

• A minimum of 2 years for category C, 5 years for category B, 10 years for COF category A, and 10 years for PSA category A of pertinent experience in EO Data Analysis;

• Proficient in English.

Selection Criteria

Extent and relevance of work experience in:

• Proficiency in two or more programming languages including Python, R, and Javascript.

• Coding experience in GEE, Jupyter Notebook, and Colab.

• Familiarity with Machine Learning and Deep Learning frameworks and packages applied to satellite image classification in the context of land cover and crop mapping (e.g., TensorFlow, Keras, PyTorch, Scikit-Learn, ts-learn, etc.).

• Satellite time series pre-processing and analysis expertise.

• Capability to work autonomously with minimal supervision.

• Advanced proficiency in Spanish and French would be advantageous.
