Role Overview:

The primary objective of this position is to seamlessly integrate Voice Core technologies and functionalities into the Vodafone IT network, aligning with the strategic goals and methodologies of the Voice Core sector. This role encompasses the entire Engineering lifecycle, from Requirements gathering through Design, Testing, Acceptance, Integration, and Deployment, ensuring a harmonious fit between Design and In-Service Performance.

This position emphasizes expertise in 2G, 3G, 4G, and 5G core network functionalities, particularly in:

  • Customer data management systems such as HLR, HSS, EIR, AUC, SCCPR, CUDB, CSDB, UDR, UDM, CCDM, and CCSM.
  • Signaling Network Functions, including SS7 & Sigtran STP/SGW, DRA, DEA, and SCP.
  • IP Multimedia Systems, which involve TAS, CSCF, SBC/SBG/BGF, MRF, AFG, and ENUM/DNS.
  • Mobile Switching Centers, specifically TSC, MSC, and MGW.

The deployment of many of these network functions leverages virtualized and containerized technologies, requiring familiarity with the VMWare Telco Cloud Platform components, including vCloud Director, vSphere, NSX-T, Teco Cloud Automation, and Tanzu Kubernetes Grid.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop detailed planning, low-level design, configuration, and integration strategies with both mobile and fixed interconnected operators.
  • Oversee the lifecycle management of systems within the Voice Core domain.
  • Conduct acceptance testing of hardware and software in the network, ensuring alignment with business functional requirements and operational suitability.
  • Perform integration testing of new technologies and services, collaborating with suppliers, Operations, Security, Regulatory, and other group functions.
  • Engage with all stakeholders to ensure timely delivery of functionalities and quality in projects, making informed decisions where the Voice Core domain leads.

Performance Metrics:

  • Achievement of network and service performance targets, defined as global benchmarks, as well as through internal and external drive trials.
  • Capacity management in accordance with Engineering Forecasts, ensuring that in-service performance remains uncompromised.
  • Timeliness and quality in project delivery.

Essential Skills and Experience:

  • Proven ability in collaboration, problem-solving, and analytical thinking based on data-driven evidence.
  • Expertise in designing telecommunications networks grounded in a solid understanding of architectural principles.
  • Ability to evaluate solutions concerning long-term and short-term objectives, customer experience, cost, and network complexity.
  • Capability to work across diverse functional and cultural boundaries to enhance operational efficiency and drive change.

Qualifications:

  • Degree in a relevant field.
  • A minimum of 2 years of professional experience in Telecommunications.
  • In-depth knowledge of core mobile network engineering for 2G, 3G, 4G, and 5G technologies.
  • Strong understanding of communication principles and protocols across all layers of the protocol stack, in line with 3GPP standards.
  • Solid grasp of virtualization (VMWare) and containerization (Kubernetes) technologies.
  • Experience with transport and networking technologies, including routing and switching protocols (e.g., BGP, ISIS, OSPF), load balancers, firewalls, and IPv4/6.
  • Preferred scripting skills (Power CLI, Powershell, Python, etc.).

Budget Responsibility:

The team manages a CAPEX budget of approximately €30M.
