Job Title: Transportation Investigator

We are seeking a highly skilled Transportation Investigator to join our team at the West Virginia Department of Transportation (WV). As a Transportation Investigator, you will play a critical role in ensuring the integrity of our transportation systems and protecting the public interest.

Job Summary:

The Transportation Investigator will conduct advanced-level investigations into reported fraud, violations of state and federal laws, and claims for damages against the state. This role requires strong analytical and communication skills, as well as the ability to work independently and as part of a team.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Analyze and evaluate information gathered through investigative techniques to determine source reliability, content validity, and potential truthfulness.
  • Develop investigative leads and links, distinguish patterns, trends, and associations, and develop potential evidence.
  • Explain statutes, rules, and regulations to parties in violation.
  • Conduct investigations regarding claims made against the state and testify in judicial and quasi-judicial forums.
  • Locate witnesses and obtain facts and evidence needed by attorneys in litigation of cases.
  • Conduct legal research and locate relevant federal and/or state law, rule, or policy.
  • Interview subjects of investigation, complainants, and witnesses using prescribed procedures.
  • Review reports drafted by subordinates and plan and organize how investigations will be conducted.
  • Perform internal audits/investigations to determine misuse of time, funds, and/or equipment.
Requirements:
  • Bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited four-year college or university.
  • Two (2) years of full-time or equivalent part-time paid experience in law enforcement or investigative work related to corporate or insurance fraud.
  • Knowledge of established and effective methods of investigation, criminal justice system, and legal terminology.
  • Ability to analyze facts, evidence, and legal instruments, and present findings in a logical and persuasive written form.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other agencies, the public, and the federal government.
