The Centre for Sustainable Energy at Fondazione Bruno Kessler is seeking a talented student to collaborate on a master's thesis project focused on the development of a control system for a hydrogen test bench dedicated to electrolysis. This project presents a unique opportunity to design and implement a control system capable of managing and monitoring the operation of an Anion Exchange Membrane (AEM) electrolyzer test bench.

Project Overview

The control system will consist of several subsystems, including:

  • State machine: Controls the flow of the electrolyzer test, transitioning from one phase to another based on predefined conditions and signals received from sensors.
  • Alarm machine: Monitors critical system parameters and generates alarms in case of malfunctions or hazardous conditions.
  • Control loops: Automatically adjusts the operating parameters of the electrolyzer, such as current, voltage, and temperature.
  • Control architecture: Defines the overall organization of the control system, including communication between the different subsystems and the user interface.

The student will also participate in a HAZOP analysis with the H2 team to identify potential hazards and their associated causes related to the control system. This analysis will lead to the implementation of safety measures to mitigate the identified risks.

Requirements

To be eligible for this project, the student should have:

  • Enrolled in a master's degree in energy engineering or equivalent.
  • Familiarity with control systems.
  • Good knowledge of physics.
  • Good knowledge of modeling dynamic and steady-state systems and optimization.
  • Basic programming skills.
