Academic Mentor

Job Summary

We are seeking a highly motivated and dedicated Academic Mentor to join our team at Gateway Community and Technical College. As an Academic Mentor, you will work closely with students to help them achieve academic success and develop the skills necessary to master course content.

Key Responsibilities:

• Create and maintain relationships with key faculty members per course division
• Seeking out and engaging in professional development opportunities
• Respecting the Gateway Student Code of Conduct at all times
• Act as content liaison, representing the needs of all tutors in specified subject
• Engage in and maintain prompt communication with the coordinator and team
• Maintain a positive and welcoming attitude with students, regardless of their frustrations and/or demeanor
• Be on time, present, and prepared for every scheduled tutoring session
• Exhibit signs of active listening
• Promote success and give positive encouragement to students for objectives reached
• Maintain confidential relationships between tutor and student
• Remain professional at all times, exhibiting professional dress standards and professionalism with technology
• Use resources and refer when necessary
• Consult with the Coordinator on difficult students' progress and any reportable circumstances
• Participate in all training sessions and required professional development
• Reach out to students referred to tutoring
• Report accurately all hours worked on the appropriate electronic payroll forms and submit by deadlines

Requirements:

• Associate's degree, or two years or more of full-time college coursework equivalent required
• Tutors must demonstrate competencies in the courses for which they wish to tutor
• Cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher required from a previously obtained degree
• 2 recommendations from previous faculty members or supervisors
• Patient, kind, dependable, and a strong interest in helping others
• Strong interpersonal communication skills
• Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate and reiterate course content
• Prior tutoring experience – at least 1 semester or 5 months of experience from another university or organization
• Understanding of subject matter relevant to students' need
• Understanding of Gateway student population and needs presented
• Commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion
• Experience in and understanding of the importance of working with students from diverse populations
• Excellent organizational skills; high attention to detail; independent; self-motivated; able to work in a fast-paced, changing environment
• Excellent interpersonal skills; ability to communicate with many individuals at all levels throughout the internal college environment as well as external business and community partners, representing his/her self in a professional and courteous manner
• Ability to communicate clearly verbally and, in writing
• Ability to multi-task, work under deadlines, and prioritize projects to meet deadlines with high levels of efficiency and accuracy
• Must have proficient computer skills in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel and Outlook)
