We are seeking a highly skilled Machine Learning Engineer to join our research team at Humanitas. The ideal candidate will have strong formalization skills and be able to convert stakeholders' needs into verifiable hypotheses to deliver better clinical services.

The main focus of this role will be on developing models to answer clinical questions with evidence in a R&D setting using structured and unstructured data from the electronic health record.

You will work closely with clinical stakeholders to evaluate KPIs, update the modeling strategy, and course-correct unverified hypotheses. You will also develop libraries to share with your team and leverage existing ones.

The main objectives of the research activity are to answer clinical questions with data-driven methodologies, with a special emphasis on evaluation, fairness, and transparency, to produce high-quality transactional research.

You will be part of the Humanitas AI Center, reporting to the Chief Innovation Officer.

Main Activities:

  • Retrieval and querying of data from distributed architecture databases
  • Exploratory data analysis on clinical data
  • Innovative algorithms design and data analysis to discover and assess significant dynamics and patterns from complex data
  • Explore, define, and support the validation of statistical and machine learning models to obtain useful tools for the biomedical field
  • Create and iterate possibly scalable computational models to make theoretical findings applicable to real-world data
  • Collaborate with international external partners on cross-academic research projects

Candidate Profile:

We are looking for motivated candidates who appreciate challenging tasks, objectives, and are strongly oriented to both scientific excellence, high-performance computing, and human relationships.

Mandatory Requirements:

  • Master's degree in a STEM-related field
  • Fluent in written and spoken English and Italian

Hard Skills:

  • Strong scripting and programming skills in Python
  • Excellent statistical knowledge
  • Experience with Data Management, Data integration, data transformation (ETL)
  • Strong experience with pre-processing and exploratory data analysis on clinical data, with effective results reporting
  • Knowledge of SQL
  • Knowledge with infrastructure as code principles
  • Knowledge of PaaS and SaaS solutions offered by Cloud Providers (Azure, AWS, GCP)
  • Experience with deployment, including knowledge of CI/CD, containerization (Docker), and related concepts
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills
