Data Center Chief Engineer

Amazon is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Data Center Chief Engineer to join our Engineering Operations team in the Greater Milan Area. This critical role is responsible for ensuring the smooth operation of our data centers, including electrical, mechanical, and fire/life safety equipment. The successful candidate will have a strong background in electrical and mechanical engineering, with experience in data center operations and maintenance. They will be responsible for overseeing the day-to-day operations and maintenance of mechanical and electrical equipment, assisting in the design and build-out of new facilities, and acting as an escalation point for all facilities-related issues within the data center region. Additionally, they will be responsible for performing root cause analysis of equipment failures, troubleshooting and reporting of facility and data server-level events, and creating and deploying new standard practices for Engineering Operations Technicians and Chief Engineers. The ideal candidate will have a strong ability to solve problems at their root, maintain SLAs through proactive issue detection and immediate response, and demonstrate good judgment and instincts in decision making. They will also have experience with reading SLDs and control schematics, and be able to prioritize in complex, fast-paced environments. The successful candidate will be based in the Milan area, but will be required to travel to other locations within the EMEA region as needed.

Key Responsibilities:
  1. Oversee the day-to-day operations and maintenance of mechanical and electrical equipment in data centers
  2. Assist in the design and build-out of new facilities
  3. Act as an escalation point for all facilities-related issues within the data center region
  4. Perform root cause analysis of equipment failures
  5. Troubleshoot and report of facility and data server-level events
  6. Create and deploy new standard practices for Engineering Operations Technicians and Chief Engineers
Competencies:
  1. Ability to solve problems at their root
  2. Aptitude for troubleshooting and problem solving
  3. Ability to maintain SLAs through proactive issue detection and immediate response
  4. Proven experience of reading SLDs and control schematics
  5. Ability to follow support procedures, system documentation, and issue tracking entries into a trouble ticket system
Physical Requirements:
  1. Work at heights and from ladders
  2. Perform physical tasks
  3. Work in a noisy environment with ear protection
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
  1. Bachelor's degree in Electrical / Mechanical Engineering or equivalent
  2. Strong working knowledge and experience of the purpose and infrastructure of a Data Center
  3. Full EU driving license
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  1. Experience in operations and on-call support for Data Center facilities or Mission Critical Plants/Production facilities
  2. Project Management experience
