Organizational Setting

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) contributes to the achievement of the Agenda through the FAO Strategic Framework by supporting the transformation to more efficient, inclusive, resilient, and sustainable agrifood systems, ensuring better production, improved nutrition, a healthier environment, and enhanced quality of life, leaving no one behind.

The Forestry Division (NFO) leads FAO's initiatives in promoting sustainable forest management and provides leadership on the environmental, social, and economic dimensions of forestry, including its contributions to poverty alleviation and food security. It collaborates with Members, civil society, and the private sector on effective forest policies, conservation, and management issues, while strengthening the role of forests in climate change mitigation and adaptation.

The Forest and Landscape Restoration Mechanism (FLRM) was established during the 22nd Session of the Committee on Forestry (COFO). The FLRM leverages the advantages of a UN Agency with expertise across various land-use sectors and an extensive network of country, subregional, and regional offices. Its aim is to scale up, monitor, and report on FLR activities to contribute to the Bonn Challenge and Biodiversity targets, coordinating and facilitating the development and implementation of projects and programs in FAO member countries in collaboration with key stakeholders.

Reporting Lines

The Forest and Landscape Restoration Mechanism Specialist will report to the Senior Forestry Officer within the FLRM team, Forestry Division.

Technical Focus

Providing technical and programmatic support to the activities of the Forest and Landscape Restoration Mechanism in Africa and to NFO's work on the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration.

Tasks and Responsibilities

The Specialist will be responsible for the following tasks organized into various work packages:

Great Green Wall Flagship
Support the launch and implementation of Component B of the GGWSSI flagship in collaboration with FAO country offices, leveraging project management and stakeholder engagement skills for effective program rollout. This includes:

  • Assessing local organizations to support the deployment of the program's entrepreneurship training curriculum.
  • Finalizing training materials to meet local demands and needs, integrating practical experience from managing training solutions across diverse cultural contexts.
  • Implementing training solutions, both in-person and online, in coordination with selected local support organizations.
  • Ensuring alignment between program elements and the broader ecosystem of stakeholders.
  • Documenting results, lessons learned, and insights to inform future training curriculum versions.
  • Identifying potential post-program partners for capacity-building continuity for trained entrepreneurs.

Targeted Support for Flagships
Facilitate the UN Decade's Flagship Targeted Support in various countries led by organizations such as WWF and ICRAF.

Achieving AFR with Forest and Farm Producers
Support the project's component focusing on value-added innovation and business incubation related to restoration value chains, creating green jobs and livelihoods in selected African countries.

Synthesis Paper on Ecosystem Restoration
Collaborate on case studies and synthesis papers regarding ecosystem restoration and certifications.

Terminal Evaluation of Closed Projects
Support the terminal evaluation of ongoing global projects in collaboration with the FAO evaluation office and national teams.

Candidates will be assessed against the following:

Minimum Requirements

  • University degree in Environmental Science, Natural Resources, or a related field.
  • At least two years of relevant experience, particularly in mentorship related to the Restoration Factory or Restoration Explorer Programs.
  • Working knowledge (level C) of English.

  • Experience in Africa, especially regarding entrepreneurship.
  • Extensive knowledge of the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration.
