Job Summary:

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Wild Horse Specialist to join our team at the Arizona Correctional Industries. As a Wild Horse Specialist, you will be responsible for supervising and assisting in the Wild Horse Program, ensuring the wild horses received are properly documented, trained, receiving proper nutrition and veterinary care.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Supervise and assist the staff and inmate workforce in the care and management of wild horses.
  • Care for, feed, tame, inoculate, shoe, transport, and market livestock.
  • Assist the Correctional Industries Production (CIP) Supervisor in monitoring material usage, expenditures, and utilization of available resources for quality assurance and efficient operation.
  • Maintain records as necessary, communicate with vendors, customers, security personnel, and other operational divisions to ensure compliance with policies and any State and Federal regulations pertaining to the program.
  • Confers with the CIP Supervisor and Regional Manager to develop and implement new horse training techniques.
  • Attend meetings as required.
  • Complete and submit reports as required and assist the CIP Supervisor with budget preparation.
  • Attend meetings and training.
  • Drive on State business.
  • Perform other duties appropriate to the assignment.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities (KSAs):
  • Knowledge of supervisory techniques for the assigned inmate workforce.
  • Production and materials management transportation and distribution systems.
  • Computer applications.
  • Divisional and Departmental policies and procedures including fire and safety standards and regulations, and security requirements and practices.
  • Current and different styles of wild horse training techniques, care, treatment, taming, proper equine nutrition, veterinary care, farrier skills, tools of the trade, transporting and marketing/sales.
  • Thorough understanding of laws, rules, regulations, policies, procedures, and personnel principles.
  • Simple bookkeeping and work scheduling procedures.
  • Quality control techniques.
  • On-the-job training principles and applications.
  • Prisoners' rights and labor relations.

Requirements:
  • Lift/carry 60 lbs.

  • Walk/run 1 mile.

  • Guide and supervise staff and an inmate workforce.
  • Reconcile mathematical problems.
  • Understand complex scheduling needs and inventory issues.
  • Operate equipment of the trade.
  • Tame, train, show, and shoe wild horses.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Three (3) years of experience and/or education consisting of horsemanship, wild horse handling, leather working, equipment repair, rope handling, pest control, proper records keeping to include health, accountability, ability, mannerisms, and evaluation potential for animal goals.
