Contract Details: The position offers a two-year employment contract.

Location: The role is based at the Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia, specifically within the Center for Convergent Technologies.

About Us: At IIT, we are dedicated to advancing human-centered science and technology to address significant societal challenges. Our headquarters in Genoa collaborate closely with multiple centers across Italy and the United States, promoting excellence in both fundamental and applied research across various scientific domains.

Our Team: As a successful candidate, you will join the Bioinspired Soft Robotics Research Line, led by Dr. Barbara Mazzolai. This team is committed to designing and developing innovative robotic solutions inspired by natural systems, operating in a vibrant, international, and multidisciplinary environment.

Project Goals: The current role is funded under the RAISE project, which aims to develop robotic platforms and AI solutions for environmental monitoring and protection. The selected candidate will collaborate with various laboratories within IIT, particularly the Smart Materials Lab.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Design and develop mechatronic systems to integrate various robotic platforms.
  • Create actuation mechanisms for soft robotic manipulators.
  • Develop prototypes and experimental setups.
  • Manage procurement of necessary materials.
  • Coordinate with the mechanical workshop for project needs.
  • Conduct prototyping and testing of robotic systems.

Essential Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics, Robotics, or related fields.
  • Minimum of two years of documented experience in mechanical system development.
  • Strong foundation in mechanical engineering principles.
  • Proficiency in 3D design software (e.g., Siemens NX, SolidWorks).
  • Experience with rapid prototyping and 3D printing technologies.
  • Excellent analytical and communication skills in English.
  • Ability to work effectively in teams and manage research data.

Additional Skills:

  • Ph.D. in a relevant field is advantageous but not required.
  • Familiarity with various prototyping techniques and machining processes.
  • Experience in soft robotics and bioinspired design.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and a proactive attitude towards learning.
  • Ability to thrive in a dynamic, interdisciplinary environment.
