Institute for Biomedicine Short description of the position: The Institute for Biomedicine (IfB), located at Bolzano’s NOI Techpark, is part of Eurac Research and drives research at the interface of genomics, cell biology, and data science to advance Precision Health. Through a unique partnership with the South Tyrolean Healthcare Service and a decade-long population study, the Institute offers an exceptional translational setting linking human data, biobanks, and advanced biological models. Within its Translational Biology pillar, IfB integrates Translational Genomics and Translational Human Cell Models, developing next-generation systems that span the full translational research cycle — from genetic discovery and molecular characterization to preclinical validation and application in Precision Health. The Role We are seeking a highly qualified and motivated Postdoctoral Scientist to join our Translational Human Cell Models group and help advance the development and application of organoid-based New Approach Methodologies (NAMs) for translational research and toxicology studies. The successful candidate will contribute to our developing organoid and organelle research platform that integrates omics-based approaches to build human-relevant model systems for studying disease mechanisms and advancing new therapeutic strategies. Key ResponsibilitiesContribute to the development and application of brain organoid-based models as New Approach Methodologies (NAMs) to study human physiology, disease mechanisms, and safety assessment. Establish and characterize vascularized and brain organoids, integrating immune and vascular components for advanced tissue modelling. Experience with barrier models, specifically Blood-Brain Barrier (BBB) models, would be desirable. Investigate neuroinflammation, vascularisation, and tissue–immune interactions using advanced imaging, functional assays, and eventually single-cell omics. Collaborate with other Senior Scientists leading the Institute’s Translational Biology programs, and with other academic and biotechnology partners, to translate discoveries into practical biomedical applications. Disseminate findings through high-impact publications and international conferences. Support grant development and third-party funding acquisition to advance collaborative research initiatives.Essential QualificationsPhD in cell biology, developmental biology, neuroscience, bioengineering, toxicology, or a related discipline with at least 5 years post-doctoral experience. Proven experience in neuroscience, developing, characterizing, and applying organoid models for biomedical or toxicological research. Strong publication record in high-quality peer-reviewed journals. Demonstrated capacity to secure external funding (fellowships, grants, or collaborative awards). Strong experimental and analytical skills, combined with the ability to contribute effectively within an interdisciplinary and collaborative research environment.Desirable Skills and ExperienceExpertise in vascularized and brain organoids and related 3D model systems. Experience with BBB models. Experience with advanced imaging, high-content analysis, or single-cell and spatial “omics”. Familiarity with microfluidic systems, or organoid–organ-on-chip integration. Understanding of toxicological applications and the regulatory context of NAMs. Organizational and leadership skills to drive cross-functional initiatives and platform development. Translational and innovation mindset, including experience in advancing organoid use for drug discovery or predictive modeling. Ability to build partnerships with internal and external stakeholders, including industry collaborators.We offerA two-year contract with possible extension.
