This role suits an experienced freelancer who is comfortable working autonomously, contributing to architectural decisions, and delivering high-quality backend solutions.The position is fully remote, with optional hybrid working in Rome for those who prefer occasional on-site collaboration.Key ResponsibilitiesDesign, develop, and maintain high-performance Java applicationsBuild and enhance backend services, APIs, and microservicesContribute to technical and architectural decisionsProduce clean, well-structured, and testable codeCollaborate closely with engineers, architects, and product stakeholdersParticipate in code reviews and uphold engineering best practicesDebug, optimise, and improve existing systemsRequired Skills & Experience5+ years’ commercial experience in Java developmentStrong hands‑on experience with Java (8+), Spring, Spring BootSolid knowledge of RESTful APIs, microservices, and distributed systemsExperience working with SQL and relational databasesFamiliarity with Git, CI / CD pipelines, and modern development workflowsComfortable working in remote, agile teamsDemonstrable experience working as a freelancer / contractor (essential)Must be based in Italy and able to invoice as a freelancerNice to HaveCloud experience (AWS, Azure, or GCP)Docker and KubernetesEvent-driven or messaging-based architecturesExperience working with international clientsAgile / Scrum environment exposureLanguage RequirementsEnglish : Professional working proficiency (written and spoken)Italian : Advantageous but not requiredWhat’s on OfferHighly competitive daily rate (€550–€750 / day)Long‑term contract (6–12 months + extension)100% remote working within ItalyOptional hybrid working in RomeWell‑defined projects and consistent workloadCollaborative, senior‑level engineering environmentEfficient interview process and fast onboardingInterested?
