Institute for Renewable EnergyShort description of the positionEurac Research is seeking a Researcher to join the Photovoltaic Systems Research Group, within the Grid Integration Team. This position offers the opportunity to work at the forefront of the energy transition, contributing to the development of intelligent, flexible and decarbonized energy systems based on advanced data-driven and AI methodologies.The successful candidate will contribute to cutting‑edge research on photovoltaic (PV) systems, battery storage and renewable energy communities (RECs), developing innovative models and control strategies that combine machine learning, optimization and reinforcement learning.A core part of the activity will take place within a national research project with the aims to integrate Artificial Intelligence into the optimization and management of renewable energy communities, supporting the PNIEC 2030 targets by increasing renewable penetration and transforming today’s passive energy systems into autonomous, intelligent and cooperative ecosystems.By joining Eurac Research, the candidate will have the opportunity to contribute to high‑impact research, work with real‑world data and systems, among industry, research and commercial stakeholders, and help shape the future of smart and sustainable energy communities.TasksDevelop data‑driven models for photovoltaic production, battery systems, and electric load demand.Implement and benchmark machine learning algorithms for PV power forecasting.Formulate and solve multi‑objective optimisation problems for renewable energy communities.Develop and test reinforcement learning agents for optimal control of distributed energy resources and energy sharing.Validate models using real-world datasets; perform sensitivity and uncertainty analyses.Contribute to scientific publications, technical documentation, and project reporting.RequirementsMaster’s degree or PhD in engineering, computer science, mathematics or physics.Strong proficiency in Python and ML/RL libraries (e.g., PyTorch, TensorFlow, scikit‑learn, Stable‑Baselines).Demonstrated skills in data analysis and data‑driven modelling, particularly applied to energy systems.Experience in the control and optimisation of energy systems, or a strong interest in developing these skills.Experience or strong interest in reinforcement learning applied to energy systems.Knowledge of PV and/or load power forecasting using machine learning techniques.Strong programming skills in Python and an analytical, problem‑solving mindset.Ability to write clear technical reports and scientific publications.Excellent knowledge of written and spoken English; knowledge of Italian is considered an asset.Ability to work independently, self‑organise tasks and meet project objectives.Strong communication skills and ability to work effectively in interdisciplinary teams.We offerThe opportunity to work on innovative, high‑impact topics in the fields of energy flexibility, decarbonisation and digitalisation.Close collaboration with prominent Italian and international companies, as well as top research and academic institutions.Work conditions designed to support professional growth and continuous know‑how development.Dedicated workspace with young, engaged colleagues and international team.Flexible working hours and an inclusive, multicultural working environment.Attractive living conditions in the heart of the Alps, offering a unique balance between work and quality of life.Eurac Research has been elected among the best workplaces in Italy.
