The Amazon Advertising business is growing at a fast pace and this team’s mission is to apply technology to accelerate that growth through best‑in‑class software engineering, data engineering, and business intelligence.In this role, you will create the vision for your team, develop your team, and define the technological roadmap by partnering with Principal Engineers and Product Managers.This position requires a technical background in operating systems, software development, and systems development, along with detailed planning, operational excellence, operational management, and effective written and verbal communication skills, adapting to different levels of audiences across the company.Key job responsibilitiesManage and develop teams that engineer key Ads technologies, including hiring, retention, performance management, mentoring, and capability/skill development.Evaluate complex business and technical requirements, and communicate inherent risks and solutions to technical and non‑technical business owners.Create vision for your team, plan focused on timely delivery, drive operational activities, and manage on‑call rotation.Influence other teams and leaders outside your organization, work hand‑in‑hand with Principal Engineers, dive deep into technical areas as needed, and coordinate with teams worldwide working in the same space.Basic Qualifications7+ years of engineering experience.5+ years of engineering team management experience. (Note: Earlier content lists 3+ years, we retain the stricter requirement.)8+ years of leading the definition and development of multi‑tier web services.Knowledge of engineering practices and patterns for the full software/hardware/networks development life cycle, including coding standards, code reviews, source control management, build processes, testing, certification, and livesite operations.Experience partnering with product or program management teams.Experience designing or architecting new and existing systems (design patterns, reliability, and scaling).Experience managing multiple concurrent programs, projects, and development teams in an Agile environment.Preferred QualificationsExperience in communicating with users, other technical teams, and senior leadership to collect requirements, describe software product features, technical designs, and product strategy.Experience recruiting, hiring, mentoring/coaching, and managing teams of Software Engineers to improve their skills and make them more effective product‑oriented engineers.Experience delivering products against plan in a fast‑paced, multi‑disciplined, distributed‑responsibility, and often ambiguous environment.Experience partnering with product and program management teams.A day in the lifeAs the manager of the team you own vision and mission of the team. You will attend daily team stand‑ups, weekly operational call hand‑offs, or other required meetings with stakeholders regarding short‑term/long‑term projects. You will weekly meet with your team to discuss their career goals and passions. You will lead operational excellence initiatives. You will partner with your Sr. SDEs and other tenured engineers to build and design architectures that will scale for the long term.
