Intern - Marine Engineering

**1. POST CONTEXT**

This is a position within the Centre for Maritime Research and Experimentation (CMRE), an organization of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO).
CMRE is an established, world-class scientific research and experimentation facility that organizes and conducts scientific research and technology development, centred on the maritime domain, delivering innovative and field tested Science & Technology (S&T) solutions to address defence and security needs of the Alliance.
The position is within the Marine Operations Division which provides in coordination with the flagging nation of the NATO Research Vessel Alliance and Coastal Research Vessel Leonardo, cost effective, safe and environmentally sound management and operation of the research vessels and ancillary craft. It coordinates NATO requirements for ships use including the use of external charter platforms when required, to support the Centre’s activities by providing sea-going capabilities.

**2. PRINCIPAL DUTIES**

This internship will be devoted to supporting projects that may include but are not limited to the following:

- Support to the configuration and technical management of the research vessels ALLIANCE and LEONARDO with emphasis on ships remaining operationally capable and relevant to accomplish the scientific mission.
- Provide support for the maintenance of appropriate ship’s operational data and records, Planned Maintenance System, Drawings and Inventory Control, E-mail, Vibration Monitoring System and Integrated Navigation System, etc.
- Support and Monitor the implementation of the technical support for the vessels including all modifications required, repairs and maintenance works;
- Monitor and advise on day to day technical issues with regards to ships operations and deployments.
- Supporting the Head Marine Operations in the planning and coordination of all ship’s activities including charters, scientific deployments, and Italian Navy activities.

**3. SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS AND ADDITIONAL DUTIES**
- a. Flexibility Clause _
- The incumbent may be required to perform other related duties even in other parts of the organization as

directed.
- As required by the Program of Work, the incumbent may be asked to participate in working groups or

project teams
All other related duties should correspond with the required competencies for the job.
- b. Deployment/Travel _
The incumbent may be required to perform his/her duties onboard Centre or chartered vessels. The incumbent
may be required to undertake TDY assignments within and outside NATO boundaries.

**4. ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS**
- a. Professional/Experience _
No professional experience is required for this position. Please see below for Desirable Qualifications.
- b. Education/Training _
Must have completed at least 3 years of study and be process of obtaining a Degree in Engineering (Marine or
Graduate students welcome to apply.
- c. Language Requirements _
A thorough knowledge of one of the two NATO languages, both written and spoken, is essential and some
knowledge of the other is desirable.

NOTE: Most of the work of CMRE is conducted in the English language.

**5. DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS**
- Seagoing background in research or other specialist vessels;
- Experience with technical teams;
- Experience working with ship’s Classification Society;
- Experience in project management;
- Knowledge the design, construction, operation and commercial management of ships;
- Working knowledge of MS Office;
- Experience in an IT Environment;
- Knowledge of the Italian language.

**6. REMARKS**

This internship is open only to nationals of a NATO Member State. Security Clearance at the NATO SECRET
level may be requested for you if deemed necessary.
Travel costs will be reimbursed up to a certain threshold. Some applicants may be eligible for further
remuneration.
