**Date**:26 Feb 2025
**Location**: Torino, IT
**Company**:newcleo
**Role Description**
**Main Activities**
- The role can have either an experimental or computational focus, or even both:
o Experimental processing, characterization and testing of materials
o Use of metallurgical codes for thermodynamics, kinetics, precipitation, and diffusion modeling
o Link structural observations (grain size and orientation, precipitation, phase transformations, chemical and mechanical properties, dislocation features ) with thermo-mechanical behavior (ductile or brittle fracture, time to rupture, creep and fatigue life, adhesive strength, radiation tolerance )
- Elaborate test plans, execute experimental activities, perform tests and measurements, analyse test results, and produce technical reports, with attention to data curation and visualization.
- Define the most appropriate measurement methods before testing in accordance with best experimental practices, in compliance with applicable standards.
- Contribute to the development of new measurement methods, tools and equipment (i.e. for tailored in-house needs), and design new parts and simple assemblies for custom tests and processes.
- Operate the equipment of the Materials Lab
o process materials in bulk form (vacuum induction melting furnace) or as surface treatments (PVD, CVD )
o prepare samples for all kinds of structural characterization methods (optical microscopes, TEM, SEM, EDX, EBSD, XRD, WDS, FIB ), thermo-mechanical testing methods (tensile, toughness, creep, fatigue, fracture mechanics, micro and nano indenters, scratch testers ) or performance testing (corrosion in Pb, ion irradiations, neutron irradiations )
o use the instruments listed above and more
- Support definition, contribute to and/or supervise extended materials R&D programs, at the laboratory and full-scale level (e.g., simulators), for both bulk materials and surface treatments.
- Follow-up and execute R&D actions related to LFR materials, including development, preparation and participation in kick-off meetings, review meetings, design meetings and studies.
- Contribute to the development and update of Newcleo’s general specifications and standard equipment data sheets according to relevant construction codes (e.g., ASME, RCC-MRx and/or EURO codes).
- Support the definition of processes and guidelines and conduct quality assurance actions in tight cooperation with the quality department. Contribute managing non-conformities and supervise expediting.
- Guarantee supply of raw materials and consumables, and that tools are delivered in accordance with the defined design. Prepare specifications and material requisitions for equipment and component supply. Make technical evaluations of manufacturer bids for the supply of raw materials, consumables, equipment and components.
- Perform quality control & inspections, as well as material or component failure analyses, ensuring that equipment manufacturers are delivering in accordance with the defined material quality level.
- Maintain lab instruments and test equipment, organize, and participate in trainings, and take the lead in the liaison with after-sales service.
- Participate in and foster a work environment that is based upon openness, trust, communication, teamwork, empowerment, innovation, and satisfaction.
**Desired Qualifications**
- Master’s degree in Nuclear, Mechanical, Materials, Physics or Chemical Engineering, or equivalent is a must.
- Fluent Italian and English. French is a plus.
- Applied experimental or computational knowledge of the main metallurgical, ceramic or surface treatment processing routes and technologies is mandatory.
- Proven experience development of advanced steel or refractory alloys, coatings, or surface treatments for use under extreme conditions is desired.

- Proven experience performing structural characterizations and thermo-mechanical tests according to specific standards (e.g., ISO, ASTM ) is desired.
- Applied knowledge of metallurgy, manufacturing and forming routes (incl. machining and welding), thermo-mechanical behavior of materials, supply and/or qualification of materials according to specific construction codes (e.g., ASME, RCC-MRx and/or EURO codes) are a very strong plus.
- Alternatively, solid experience developing new materials through thermodynamic simulation tools, such as JMatPro or ThermoCalc is a strong plus.
- Applied knowledge of radiation damage in materials is a strong plus.
- Experience with accident tolerant fuels is a strong plus.
- Applied knowledge and hands-on experience with creep, creep-fatigue, low-cycle fatigue, and fracture mechanics is a plus.
- Applied knowledge of mole
