Extracurricular Internship

**Human Technopole (HT)**is an interdisciplinary life science research institute, created and supported by the Italian Government, with the aim of developing innovative strategies to improve human health. HT is composed of five Centers: Neurogenomics, Computational Biology, Structural Biology, Genomics, and Health Data Science. The Centers work together to enable interdisciplinary research and to create an open, collaborative environment that will help promote life science research both nationally and internationally.

The Health Data Science Centre at HT has been planned in partnership with Politecnico di Milano and will develop several lines of research, with the aim to help deliver a step-change in health data science in Italy. The Centre’s mission is to systematically generate, mobilise, and harvest “big data” allowing agnostic and dynamic collection of information, to deliver a new class of research that will enable a better understanding of the clinical, molecular, behavioural and environmental determinants of non-communicable diseases, for both patient and public benefit.

**Internship Project Description**

We are seeking a motivated intern to join our team and contribute to advancing research on women’s health. Building on ongoing projects, the intern will be involved in a project whose aim is to develop a comprehensive algorithm to analyze a large dataset of over 7,000 plasma proteins in relation to different stages in a woman's life course, focusing on identifying phase-specific variations and understanding how these might relate to factors such as age, obesity, and type 2 diabetes.

**Key tasks and activities**
- Data Cleaning: support in ensuring the accuracy of the data by cleaning and preprocessing the dataset, addressing missing values, outliers, and ensuring data consistency.
- Descriptive Statistics: support in analyzing and summarizing the proteomic data to identify trends, variations, and key insights related to different life phases and health factors.
- Algorithm Development: support in designing and implementing algorithms to process large
- scale proteomic data, helping to identify patterns in protein levels across different life phases.

**Essential requirements**
- Excellent knowledge of programming language (R or Python).
- Previous learning experience of analysing large scale data for population health science projects.

**Preferred requirements**
- Prior learning experience with handling molecular (proteomic) data.
- Scientific interest and previous learning experience in the field of women's health across reproductive stages.

**Organizational and social skills**
- Excellent communication and team working skills.
