Transmission Machining Process Engineer
2 ore fa
Engineering associated with the manufacturing process. Responsible for departmental operations planning/execution or is focused on execution of professional activities within a technical discipline. Functions with some autonomy but guided by established policies or review of end results.
The job allows modification of procedures and practices covering work as long as the end results meet standards of acceptability (quality, volume, timeliness etc.).
The Process Engineer owns preliminary-phase industrialization—setting direction with stakeholders, aligning with manufacturing sites, and de-risking early decisions (including make/buy and capacity trade-offs)—and supports the detailed phase to ensure continuity and flawless execution, with strong focus on Safety, Quality, Delivery, and Cost.Job Description
Essential responsibilities
Technical feasibility; time, cost, capacity modeling:
Evaluate manufacturability, cycle times, and should/target costs for NPIs and design changes, ensuring DFM/DFA (Producibility) through simultaneous engineering with the Design Engineering function
Build standard times, line balancing, resource loading and model productivity scenarios
Identify the optimal technological solution in compliance with standards, and define the resulting new-technology development plans (MRL) required for the program
Contribute to make/buy decisions, capacity planning, and risk/opportunity trade-offs
Propose cost-out levers (tooling optimization, cycle time reduction, automation)
Process definition – gears and associated operations: define end-to-end machining routers: hobbing, shaping, power skiving, heat treatment, grinding, honing, superfinishing, deburring/chamfering; specify cutting parameters and process sequence to meet dimensional, surface integrity, and productivity targets
Equipment, tools, and fixturing:
Specify/select machines: turn-mill platforms, 5-axis machining centers, gear hobbing/shaping/skiving, gear grinding/honing, dynamic balancing
Define/validate concept for cutting tools, fixtures, and workholding
Consolidate with site Manufacturing Engineering installation strategy and acceptance criteria for new/modified equipment
Industrial readiness and preventive quality:
Develop process flow, process-at-a-glance, standard work, preliminary PFMEA, Control Plan, preliminary capability study
Detailed-phase and execution responsibilities (Support):
Support capability studies, FAI, and machine buy-off by aligning criteria, data, and lessons learned with execution teams
Collaborate on issue resolution, deviation management, and containment/improvement actions through ramp-up to protect SQDC targets
Continuous improvement (SQDC)
Reduce scrap/rework, improve OEE, optimize tooling life, shorten lead and manufacturing times
Ensure all technical best practices are captured, then standardize and deploy lessons learned across part families
Tools and technologies:
Equipment: gear hobbing/shaping/power skiving, gear grinding/honing, turn-mill, 5-axis machining centers, dynamic balancing; gear inspection benches
Software: CAD/PLM, CAM (gear and turn-mill), time & methods tools, MES/ERP, data analytics/BI
Methods: DOE, capability studies, variation reduction, standard work, structured problem solving
Qualifications/Requirements
Degree in Mechanical/Aerospace/Materials Engineering or equivalent proven experience
Proven experience in process/manufacturing engineering for gears or precision machining and with gear machining cycles
Hands-on competence in tools, fixtures, cutting strategies, and process parameters
Experience in time & methods, standard times, and production cost modeling
Working knowledge of thermal/surface treatments and impact on material properties
English and Italian fluent knowledge
Work Visa, in accordance with local regulation, is required
Desired Characteristics
Aerospace or automotive powertrain/precision gears background
Familiarity with PFMEA, Control Plan, APQP/PPAP, MSA, SPC, capability studies
Knowledge of gear metrology and acceptance criteria (involute, lead/profile, waviness)
Experience with turn-mill, 5-axis machining centers, gear grinding/honing, dynamic balancing
Strong teamwork, problem solving, and clear, concise technical communication
Exposure to EHS, ergonomics, machine safety
Partner with CME, AME, Plant CoE, Design Engineering, Quality, Maintenance, and suppliers to deliver robust, cost-effective solutions; contribute to make/buy, supplier onboarding, and technical reviews
Analytical mindset; structured problem solving; attention to detail
Bias for action, ownership, accountability on deliverables and timelines
Continuous improvement mindset; curiosity for new technologies
Prioritization and planning in fast-paced NPI environments
