The Human Technopole Foundation (HT) is an interdisciplinary research institute, created and supported by the Italian government, whose aim is to develop innovative strategies to promote human health and healthy aging through a multidisciplinary and integrated approach, combining genomics, computational biology, structural biology, neuroscience and health data science. HT scientists work together to enable interdisciplinary research and to create an open, collaborative environment to help promote life science research nationally and internationally. In line with its mission to serve the research community at large, HT operates National Facilities, specifically aimed at making HT's technologies, methods and tools available to the national scientific community.

The Human Technopole Foundation is looking for a
Storage Engineer
to work within the Data Centre Facility.

The Storage Engineer will be responsible for the design, implementation, management, optimization, and security of the Institute's centralized storage infrastructure. This role ensures the high availability, scalability, and performance of storage solutions that support research, administrative, and ICT operations.

Key responsibilities include developing and enforcing policies and procedures for consistent storage provisioning, uptime, regulatory compliance, and data protection. The Storage Engineer will also manage storage usage metrics and provide forecasts for future capacity needs. The role involves close collaboration with the virtualization, database, and cybersecurity teams to implement best practices, automate workflows, and strengthen data protection strategies.

Your Main Tasks And Responsibilities

• Design, deploy, and manage enterprise storage solutions, including SAN (Storage Area Networks), NAS (Network Attached Storage), and object storage;
• Maintain the health of the storage systems of the ICT Infrastructure team;
• Monitor storage performance, capacity utilization and availability, ensuring optimal efficiency;
• Optimize storage tiering, deduplication, compression, and caching to enhance performance;
• Provide advice, plan and improve storage infrastructure and related systems;
• Deployment, configuration and management of new storage devices;
• Implement best practices for high availability (HA), load balancing, and disaster recovery (DR) in storage environments;
• Develop and maintain data protection strategies, including backup, replication, and archival solutions;
• Manage snapshot policies, retention schedules, and data recovery testing;
• Ensure compliance with institute data retention policies and regulatory requirements;
• Monitor storage health and proactively resolve performance issues;
• Perform emergency maintenance of storage-based systems;
• Conduct root cause analysis (RCA) and implement preventive measures for recurring storage incidents;
• Collaborate with ICT teams to troubleshoot storage-related issues affecting applications and databases;
• Provide documentation for storage deployments;
• Maintain operations documentation for storage-based platforms;
• Maintain up-to-date storage architecture diagrams, configurations, and operational procedures;
• Enforce storage policies, documentation standards, and operational guidelines;
• Create business documents for new storage-based offerings;
• Conduct training sessions and mentor junior ICT members on storage best practices;
• Design and implement storage systems that meet organizational requirements;
• Collaborate with other ICT teams to ensure seamless integration of storage systems with other technologies;
• Work on projects assigned;
• Monitor and implement security practices to safeguard storage infrastructures;
• Work with CyberSecurity team to enforce access controls, encryption, and data integrity measures;
• Implement role-based access controls (RBAC) and audit logging to ensure compliance;
• Ensure storage infrastructures comply with relevant institutional policies and regulatory standards;
• Support audit processes and contribute to the development of security policies;
• Conduct storage vulnerability assessments and risk mitigation planning.

Requirements
Mandatory requirements:

• Bachelor's degree in computer science, Information Technology or a related field;
• At least 5 years of experience as a storage engineer in an enterprise environment;
• Expertise in enterprise storage technologies (SAN, NAS, iSCSI, Fibre Channel, NFS, SMB, S3);
• Knowledge of backup and disaster recovery solutions (Bacula, Veeam, Commvault, etc.);
• Good English communication skills, both written and spoken.

Preferred Requirements

• Master's degree in in computer science, Information Technology or a related field;
• Experience in managing Tape Libraries in an enterprise context;
• NetApp Certified Data Administrator (NCDA);
• Dell EMC Proven Professional – Storage Administrator;
• Hitachi Vantara Certified Specialist – Storage Solutions;
• AWS Certified Storage – Specialty;
• ITIL certification;
• Strong experience with enterprise storage platforms like, but not limited to, Dell EMC, Netapp, Hitachi, etc;
• Strong working knowledge in scale-out storage solutions;
• Knowledge of cloud storage services (Azure Blob, AWS S3, Google Cloud Storage);
• Knowledge of automation, preferably with tools like Ansible, Terraform, etc.;
• Scripting experience in Python, Powershell, bash, etc.

• Strong problem-solving skills with a proactive approach to storage performance and availability;
• Ability to collaborate effectively in a multidisciplinary ICT environment;
• Highly adaptable in dynamic, fast-paced environments with a strong willingness to take on new challenges.
