Job Summary
The Glacier Monitoring Assistant supports scientific and environmental teams in observing, measuring, and documenting glacier conditions. This role involves field data collection, equipment maintenance, data analysis, and reporting to help assess glacier health, climate change impacts, and long-term environmental trends.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist with on-site glacier monitoring activities, including ice thickness, melt rates, snow accumulation, and movement measurements
- Install, calibrate, and maintain monitoring equipment such as GPS devices, weather stations, and sensors
- Collect and record field data accurately following established scientific protocols
- Support data processing, basic analysis, and visualization using spreadsheets, GIS, or scientific software
- Conduct photographic and drone-based documentation of glacier changes (where permitted)
- Ensure safety procedures are followed during fieldwork in extreme and remote environments
- Assist in preparing technical reports, research summaries, and environmental impact documentation
- Coordinate with scientists, researchers, and project managers on field schedules and logistics
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree or ongoing study in Environmental Science, Geology, Glaciology, Geography, Climate Science, or a related field
- Basic knowledge of climate change, cryosphere science, or environmental monitoring
- Willingness and physical ability to work in cold, high-altitude, and remote environments
- Strong attention to detail and ability to follow scientific protocols
- Basic data management and computer skills
Preferred Qualifications
- Fieldwork experience in polar, alpine, or remote environments
- Familiarity with GIS, remote sensing, or data analysis tools
- Experience with GPS equipment, drones, or environmental sensors
- First aid, wilderness safety, or mountaineering training
