JOB TITLE: Data Analyst (Global Food Insecurity Analysis)

DURATION: 11 months
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE OF THE ASSIGNMENT:
As many as 318 million people are acutely food insecure in 2025 in countries with WFP operations and where data is available. Protracted conflict, climate disasters, economic shocks and the prolonged financial aftermath of the pandemic continue driving up needs, while funding levels
dwindle, and access constraints reduce the humanitarian space and increase operational costs.
Providing up-to-date, consistent information on the magnitude and severity of food crises and needs
– globally, regionally and per country - is of strategic importance for WFP, in order to be able to communicate needs to potential donors, raise awareness, also in partnership with other organizations, and to inform strategic decisions within WFP.
WFP's Food Security and Nutrition Analysis Service (Needs Assessment and Targeting Unit) is the main provider of numbers, analysis and contents on global trends of acute food insecurity and food assistance needs within WFP, and provides inputs for several flagship reports and other documents of strategic importance, including WFP's Global Outlook, the FAO-WFP Hunger Hotspots Report and the Global Report on Food Crises. Global food insecurity information is regularly required for senior management briefs and communication products.
APP-FA is looking for a Data Analyst with experience in quantitative data analysis and database management, in particular with excellent excel skills, for the analysis of global food insecurity trends and its drivers, including conflict and displacement.
ACCOUNTABILITIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:
Under the overall guidance of the VAM officer (Global Needs), the Consultant will be responsible for providing data and analysis on the number of people in acute food insecurity and the drivers, globally, regional and by country.
• Regularly update and improve the database of IPC/CH and equivalent numbers per country.
• Support the development of technical solutions to allow easy access to the data, for example
through APIs and data visualisations.
• Provide analysis on trends of acute food insecurity.
• Compile and analyse data on acute food insecurity in displacement situations.
• Contribute needs numbers and analysis to WFP and joint flagship reports (Global Report on Food
Crises, WFP Global Outlook, WFP Corporate Alert System, and FAO-WFP Hunger Hotspots Report)
• Draft talking points and senior management briefs and other talking points.
• Draft publications on methods and use of WFP's global acute food insecurity numbers.
• Any other related assignments as agreed with the supervisor.
DELIVERABLES AT THE END OF THE CONTRACT:
• Up-to-date and improved internal database on acute food security, including operational data and
data on displacement situations.
• Contributions to Global Report on Food Crises, WFP Global Outlook, WFP Corporate Alert System,
Hunger Hotspots Report provided.
• Talking points and management briefs provided on demand
QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:
Education:
• Advanced university degree in data science, economics, social science, geography, development, international relations, conflict studies or related field
Experience:
• At least 3 years' work experience in food security or conflict analysis, in different settings
Knowledge & Skills:
• Excellent knowledge of excel.
• Experience in working with databases.
• Knowledge of other suitable data management, analysis and data visualization software (Python/R,
SQL, …) is an asset.
• Good understanding of data, indicators and methodologies behind different types of food security and/or conflict indicators
• Good understanding of global and regional trends in food crises and drivers for food insecurity, in particular conflict.
• Good understanding and experience with needs assessment analysis, frameworks and actors, with a focus on food security, for example experience with IPC, CH, or HNO processes is an asset
• Demonstrated ability to write analytical reports and present findings

Languages:
• Fluency in English required, knowledge of other UN languages is an asset
