Organizational setting
The Fisheries and Aquaculture Division (NFI) is responsible for all the ecological, economic, social, institutional, governance and policy aspects of fisheries and aquaculture and their development, with particular emphasis on human wellbeing, food security, nutrition and poverty reduction, with due regard to the protection of the environment. The work includes collection, validation, analysis and dissemination of the best available and up to date statistics on all aspects of the sector. The Division is also responsible for FAO's activities related to the management and conservation of living aquatic resources in accordance with modern standards and best practices, including fisheries technologies and safety at sea; the development of sustainable aquaculture; support for the development of effective value chains of aquatic products, including reducing loss and waste, product development, food safety and health, and access to markets and ultimately to consumers, in the context of integrated food systems' approaches.

The position is located in the Fisheries and Aquaculture Division (NFI) at FAO headquarters in Rome, Italy.

Reporting Lines
The Fishery Officer reports to the Senior Fishery Officer /Team Leader in the Statistics and Information team, NFISI.

Technical Focus
The Fishery Officer will support the development, management and analysis of fisheries and aquaculture data and information systems, contributing to the innovation and integration of standards, tools and methodologies along the data value chain. The Fishery Officer will assist in strengthening FAO's capacity to deliver evidence-based policy support, global reporting and knowledge products, and enhance the visibility and accessibility of fisheries and aquaculture information.

Collection and analysis of information, data and statistics and project/meeting services to support programme projects, products and services.

Key Functions

Collects and analyses relevant technical, social, economic, environmental, institutional and technology related information, data and/or statistics to support the delivery of programme projects, as well as products and services.

Undertakes analysis, provides technical input for plans and reports and edits/revises technical/scientific documents.

Participates in the development of improved work methods, tools and systems.

Updates databases and web pages.

Participates in multidisciplinary project/work teams.

Collaborates in the development of training tools and materials and the organization of workshops/seminars, etc.

Participates in the organization, conduct and follow-up of meetings, consultations and conferences, the development/production of required materials and the provision of information and assistance to partners.

Specific Functions

Supports data management, processing and analysis activities underpinning FAO fisheries and aquaculture knowledge products.

Contributes to the design of data models and web-based user interfaces for the development of knowledge products.

Assists in the development and application of data and metadata standards, methodologies and tools to improve data quality, interoperability and dissemination.

Provides support to the maintenance and content management of FAO fisheries and aquaculture web platforms and information systems.

Contributes to the implementation of web-based information systems and platforms, including content structuring and data integration.

Contributes to the preparation, editing and review of technical documents, reports and communication materials.

Supports capacity development activities and projects, including training and technical assistance to Members on data collection, management and reporting systems.

Participates in the coordination with partners and stakeholders, including international and regional organizations, in support of data sharing and information initiatives.
