Want to help build Italy's next generation of renewable energy projects? As a Senior Development Engineer at European Energy, you'll lead the technical development of large-scale solar, wind and battery storage projects that power the energy transition. This is your chance to combine technical expertise with strategic influence in a fast-growing international company. Join us and help turn ambitious renewable energy plans into reality. European Energy is a growing company in the renewable energy sector. We are a privately owned Danish company founded in 2004, with our headquarters in Copenhagen. We develop, construct, and operate solar (PV) and wind energy projects globally, as well as Power-to-X projects. In addition, we explore new technologies, including battery energy storage, biogas, and carbon capture. As part of this, we are highly active in M&A activities across the entire value chain. Our core values form the foundation of everything we do: In It Together, Trust and Courage, Ambition, Excitement, Inclusion, and Agility. Your New Team You will join European Energy Italy, a team of approximately 15 colleagues based primarily at our Milan office. In this role, you will work closely with colleagues across the organization, including our EPC team at headquarters in Copenhagen, Denmark, collaborating on grid connection, technology, and design aspects of our projects. We are a highly motivated, ambitious, and supportive team where trust, knowledge sharing, and open dialogue form the foundation of how we work together. As our project pipeline in Italy continues to grow rapidly, you will play a key role in a wide range of technical activities, gaining hands-on experience while benefiting from excellent opportunities for professional growth and increasing responsibility over time. Your New Role As our new Senior Development Engineer, you will support the Project Development team with permitting and grid connections in the screening, development and early structuring phase. You will lead the development engineering activities behind our Italian portfolio of utility-scale solar PV, onshore wind and battery energy storage system (BESS) projects, including hybrid plants combining all three technologies. Working closely with engineering consultants, grid operators and public authorities, you will own the technical side of our projects from site origination and grid connection requests through permitting and up to Final Investment Decision (FID). Your goal will be to make every project technically robust, cost-competitive, bankable and fully compliant with the Italian regulatory framework. This is a senior role for an engineer who combines technical depth and sound judgement with commercial awareness, and who can translate engineering choices into better investment decisions across the portfolio. Your Responsibilities Grid Connection and Evaluation
• Lead grid connection requests with Terna and the relevant DSOs (e.g. e-distribuzione), under both the current and the reformed framework, from application through technical queries to final connection approvals
• Analyse Terna's microzone capacity data and connection offer ahead of each Open Season to identify the most valuable connection points for new and existing projects
• Prepare and manage the company's participation in each Open Season, from selecting connection solutions to obtaining the connection attestation through Terna's portal, optimizing our position on the grid.
• Represent European Energy in technical discussions, connection procedures and working groups with grid operators and other external stakeholders, including Terna technical tables for shared connection solutions. Hybridization
• Review the current pipeline to identify hybridization opportunities across solar PV, wind and BESS, at both plant and connection-point level.
• Assess hybridization strategies from a technical and economic perspective, including technology mix, sizing, shared use of connection capacity and curtailment risk.
• Optimize the point of connection and capacity allocation for hybrid projects, ensuring technical coherence across technologies.
• Ensure technical coherence across technologies at shared connection points, working with Project Development, EPC department and commercial teams to maximize the value of each site. Project Development and Permitting
• Identify new opportunities through GIS-based site screening and grid capacity analysis (e.g. Terna Econnextion, DSO hosting-capacity maps), including powered land for data center use
• Review and optimize project layouts to maximize energy yield, installed capacity, permitting success and overall project value.
• Act as the main technical interface between Project Development, EPC department, engineering consultants, technology suppliers and specialist advisors.
• Coordinate site investigations, engineering studies and multidisciplinary assessments needed to move projects through internal milestones and permitting procedures (PAS, Autorizzazione Unica, PAUR, VIA).
• Contribute to improving internal tools for pipeline tracking and management. Prerequisites to progress in the job
• Master's degree in Electrical, Energy or Industrial Engineering, or equivalent.
• At least 5 years' experience in the engineering and development of utility-scale renewable energy projects in Italy.
• Proven track record taking solar PV, wind and/or BESS projects through development to ready-to-build status or FID.
• Hands-on experience managing grid connection requests with Terna and DSOs, with solid knowledge of Italian connection rules (ARERA TICA, Terna Grid Code, CEI 0-16).
• Good understanding of the Italian regulatory and permitting framework (ARERA, MASE, GSE; PAS, Autorizzazione Unica, PAUR, VIA).
• Proficiency in QGIS, Google Earth and AutoCAD, as well as Microsoft Office and project tracking tools.
• Fluent Italian and English, both written and spoken.
