Job Description
Hitachi Rail is looking for an enthusiastic self-motivated Eco Design Engineer who thrives in a fast-paced environment. The successful candidate is comfortable performing a wide range of tasks within our Rolling Stock Engineering Department. The position is based in Pistoia

Accountabilities Act as the Ecodesign and Chemical Compliance focal point for rolling stock projects, ensuring alignment with internal sustainability requirements and applicable regulations. Collect, analyse, and manage environmental and technical data to develop Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), Product Carbon Footprint (PCF), and Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) studies in accordance with ISO 14040, ISO 14044, ISO 14025, and ISO 14067. Support the integration of ecodesign principles and sustainability criteria throughout the product development lifecycle. Collaborate with Procurement and Engineering teams to support supplier selection and engagement based on sustainability, circular economy, and environmental performance evidence. Provide technical support on ecodesign, circularity, material sustainability, and chemical compliance topics to internal stakeholders. Represent the company in European and international working groups focused on Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), Circular Economy, Ecodesign, and related sustainability initiatives. Contribute to the development and implementation of sustainability strategies, methodologies, and best practices across the business. Knowledge of Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) methodology and environmental sustainability principles. Knowledge of ISO 14040 and ISO 14044 standards. Experience (3
- 5 years) in collecting, analysing and managing environmental and technical data. Experience (3
- 5 years) with LCA software tools (preferably SimaPro or equivalent). Understanding of Ecodesign, Circular Economy and sustainability principles. Knowledge of chemical compliance requirements and material-related environmental regulations. Strong analytical and problem-solving skills. Ability to collaborate effectively with multidisciplinary teams, suppliers and external stakeholders. Good communication skills and ability to work in an international environment. Desired Skills/ Knowledge Experience (3
- 5 years) in developing Product Carbon Footprint (PCF) and Environmental Product Declaration (EPD). Knowledge of ISO 14025 and ISO 14067 standards. Experience (3
- 5 years) in the railway, transportation, manufacturing or industrial sector. Familiarity with sustainability regulations and reporting frameworks. Experience (3
- 5 years) supporting supplier sustainability assessments and sustainable procurement activities. Knowledge of Digital Product Passport (DPP), Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR) and related European sustainability legislation. Experience (3
- 5 years) participating in international or industry working groups related to LCA, Circular Economy or Ecodesign. Knowledge of material circularity assessment methodologies and circular economy indicators. Knowledge of Social Life Cycle Assessment (S-LCA) methodologies and social sustainability impact assessment across product life cycles. Project management and stakeholder engagement experience. Education/Qualifications Master's Degree in Environmental Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Materials Engineering, or a related discipline. Proven experience in Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) and environmental sustainability within industrial or manufacturing environments. Languages Fluent English, both written and spoken, with the ability to work in an international environment and represent the company in external working groups and technical forums.
