Offer DescriptionThe selected candidate will i) Identify and characterize optical companions of recently discovered binary millisecond pulsars (MSPs) in globular clusters; ii) Use the derived properties of MSPs in globular clusters to predict the rate of low-frequency gravitational wave signals, test the equation of state of matter at nuclear equilibrium density, and evaluate binary system evolution models; iii) Compare observational results with dynamical simulations to connect the properties of the MSP population to the dynamical state of the host star cluster; iv) Run simulations specifically aimed at reproducing images with the expected properties for the ELT/MORFEO-MICADO system, testing the observability of some of the most interesting binary MSPs, and defining the most efficient observational strategies
Master's degree or single-cycle degree in Astronomy and Physics, or an equivalent qualification obtained abroad. Proficiency is also required in Python programming, environments for simulating realistic images of the ELT/MORFEO-MICADO system (e.g., Scopesim), and photometric analysis tools (PSF-fitting, e.g., DAOPHOT).
