The Fishery Officer (Aquaculture) reports to the Senior Aquaculture Officer/NFIAP Team Leader in the Sustainable Aquaculture area under the overall supervision of the Deputy Director, NFI.

Technical Focus
Support to the development of sustainable, efficient and well-governed aquaculture for a more inclusive, resilient and healthy aquatic food system, including minimizing use of scarce resources creating an equitable sharing of risks and benefits among all value chain actors.
Support the implementation of policies and programmes of work aimed at maximizing the positive impacts on aquaculture on countries' economic, social and environmental priorities, including food security and nutrition, and that are in line with FAO's common vision for sustainable food and agriculture, the FAO Code of Conduct for Responsible Fisheries, the guidelines for sustainable aquaculture and other associated guidelines.

Research, technical analysis and project related services to support the delivery of programme projects, products and services.

Key Functions
• Researches, analyses and provides access to fisheries and aquaculture technical, social, economic, environmental, institutional and technology related data, and information and/or related policy issues to support the delivery of fisheries and aquaculture programmes, projects, products, publications and services.
• Produces a variety of technical data, statistics, information and reports as well as input for technical documents and web pages.
• Provides technical, statistical, and/or analytical services on various studies, projects and initiatives, and/or assessments; provides technical backstopping to field projects.
• Participate in the development of improved/updated technical, statistical and/or analytical tools, methodologies, systems, databases and/or key social/economic/environmental/ nutritional and/or early warning indicators, etc.
• Participates in multidisciplinary teams and/or leads working groups/teams; collaborates with other Divisions/Offices/Centres on work groups and committees and promotes best practices.
• Collaborates in, provides technical backstopping to and ensures the quality/effectiveness of capacity development activities within Members, such as organizational development and individual learning events, including preparation of related information, learning materials and on-line tools.
• Promotes knowledge sharing and best practices at international meetings and conferences and influences partners in stakeholder consultations.
• Supports resource mobilization activities in accordance with the FAO Strategic Framework.

Specific Functions
• Provides organizational and technical support to relevant global and regional processes, including the COFI (Committee on Fisheries) Sub-Committee on Aquaculture and the Global Sustainable Aquaculture Advancement Partnership.
• Supports the work of FAO and partners, including Decentralized Offices and Regional Fisheries Bodies/Aquaculture Networks, in the mainstreaming and implementation of the guidelines for sustainable aquaculture in line with the ecosystem approach to aquaculture and FAO's Blue Transformation roadmap.
• Supports the development of partnerships and resource mobilization in aquaculture and related sectors through agreements, letters of intent, or memoranda of understanding.
• Supports the communication and knowledge products of FAO's work on sustainable aquaculture through contributions to FAO aquaculture news, stories, social media posts, publications and other platforms, as applicable.
• Organizes and supports the implementation of meetings, consultations and workshops on sustainable aquaculture development.
• Provides technical inputs to field projects, particularly in relation to the contribution of sustainable aquaculture to the four betters.

CANDIDATES WILL BE ASSESSED AGAINST THE FOLLOWING

Minimum Requirements
• Advanced university degree in agriculture, biology, animal science and nutrition, fisheries and aquaculture, aquatic sciences or related discipline or closely related field. 
• Five years of relevant experience in aquaculture development, processing, including experience in the formulation and/or implementation of aquaculture operations in developing countries. 
• Working knowledge (proficient - level C) of English and limited knowledge (intermediate - level B) of another FAO official language (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian or Spanish).

Technical/Functional Skills
• Work experience in more than one location or area of work, particularly in field positions.
• Extent and relevance of experience or knowledge in providing scientific support and advice to national, regional and international research and/or development projects in both developed and developing countries.
• Extent and relevance of experience in planning and implementing research and/or development programmes in sustainable aquaculture and its integration with other agricultural sectors.
• Demonstrated results-based management capabilities with an ability to manage programmes, budgets and human resources efficiently under shifting priorities.
• Depth of knowledge of current global issues, trends, constraints and research needs related to sustainable aquaculture.
• Extent of experience and ability in resource mobilization.
• Extent and relevance of experience in organizing international meetings, seminars and training courses.
