Position Description Assists in the examination and treatment of patients by tracking patient information, documenting the medical record, assisting with in-office procedures and testing, administering medications and providing patient and caregiver education. Duties are performed under the oversight and direction of professional clinical staff and providers as outlined in the Clinical Support Staff Scope of Practice document. Hours of Operation Mon–Fri, 12:00pm–8:00pm; Sat/Sun, 8:00am–4:00pm. Urgent Care offers shift differentials for all shifts: $2.00 per hour during regular business hours and $4.00 per hour after 5pm and on weekends. Essential Job Functions Greets and escorts patient and other guests to examination room. Determines and documents reason for visit; assesses if patient information requires higher level follow up within the scope of the role. Performs initial response screening and obtains information from patient to update EMR history. Obtains patient vital signs and documents in EMR, including pulse, temperature, blood pressure, height/weight and BMI. Directly enters medication, laboratory and radiology orders into the EMR; follows state, local and professional guidelines. Performs diagnostic tests as directed; operates equipment to administer routine diagnostic tests. Performs basic Gaps in Care and TB testing for credentialed MAs as applicable. Tracks and informs patient of laboratory/diagnostic test results as directed; communicates provider instructions based on results. Administers prescribed medications and facilitates prescription renewals as directed by the provider. Performs general specimen collection and assists with procedures/surgeries as required; adheres to policies, procedures and safety precautions. Participates in disease management programs under supervision of Care Manager and/or Nurse Manager. Supports practice performance on quality incentives (e.g., PCMH, health plan incentives). Provides patient/family education as directed; takes and relays messages accurately and timely. Serves as liaison between patient and provider; ensures timely follow-up. Attends required meetings and participates in committees; supports other offices and trainings as assigned. Performs other duties within MA scope of certification. Essential Functions for MA I in Workplace Health Performs all Essential Functions of the Medical Receptionist I. Performs drug and alcohol testing (DOT rules and regulations) and FIT testing. Measured By Performance meets or exceeds IHA CARES Values expectations as outlined in the IHA Performance Review document relative to the position. Essential Qualifications Education: High School Diploma or GED. Successful completion of one of the following MA-related programs or credentials: MA program and externship/internship; Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) program; Paramedic program; or Certified Athletic Trainer. If credentialed, maintain current MA Re-Certification CEUs. Credentials/Licensure MA-Non-Credentialed I: MA eligible to attain Medical Assistant Certification is desired, or EMT with current/active license in the State of Michigan, or Paramedic following successful completion of the National Registry Paramedic Exam and/or holds a current/active license in the State of Michigan. Valid CPR certification. MA-Credentialed I: Certification as Medical Assistant through one of the following agencies: CMA, RMA, NCMA, CCMA, NRCMA, CMAC. For Workplace Health MA I’s: DOT Drug Screen Collector and DOT Breath Alcohol Technician certifications are required. Minimum Experience 0–1 year of previous clinical experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience preferred. If MA program/externship/internship is not completed, 2+ years of clinical experience providing clinical support in a community-based clinic may be required, subject to standardized testing and evaluation of clinical skills. Position Requirements (Abilities & Skills) Ability to perform all NEO Basic Competencies and Medical Receptionist I Essential Functions. Onsite work mode. Competency in obtaining accurate patient vital statistics and health history. Subject to standardized testing and evaluation of clinical skills. Proficiency in medical terminology and desktop computer systems, including EMR, email, e-learning, intranet, and navigation; ability to adapt to other software as needed. Excellent written and verbal communication; proper phone etiquette. Ability to work collaboratively in a team and with diverse populations; provide courteous service. Ability to cross-train in other practice areas to ensure smooth operations. Good organizational and time management skills; ability to prioritize in changing medical situations. Sound judgment and problem-solving abilities; ability to perform basic dosage calculations. Knowledge of clinical care compliance and HIPAA privacy practices. Ability to handle confidential information appropriately. Maintain exam rooms and inventory; travel to other sites as needed. Complete IHA competency-based program within introductory training. Minimum Physical and Environmental Expectations Onsite work mode; regular walking around the hospital/clinic. Physical activity includes keyboarding, computer use, lifting up to 50 lbs; handling patients; walking, bending, stooping, reaching, climbing, kneeling, twisting. Occasional lifting/pushing/pulling up to 100 lbs; specific vision and manual dexterity requirements; English-speaking communication. Work in a medical facility with exposure to patient care equipment, potential hazards, and stressful environments.
