**Organizational Setting**

The Markets and Trade Division (EST) monitors and analyses trends in international, regional and national agricultural commodity markets, collecting and disseminating comprehensive market and policy information concerning the major traded commodities and those important to food security. It also undertakes forward-looking outlook studies. The Division analyses issues that affect global food and agricultural trade, including policy analysis of trade measures and agreements, and provides technical support and capacity building to members in all these areas. Through its Global Information and Early Warning Service, the Division is also responsible for FAO's early warnings on food shortfalls. The Division houses the secretariats of the Committee on Commodity Problems (CCP), the Intergovernmental Commodity Groups (IGGs) and the Agricultural Market Information System (AMIS).

The Team on Responsible Global Value Chains in EST facilitates the World Banana Forum (WBF), a permanent multi-stakeholder platform for participants representing the global banana supply-chain to promote collaboration towards an improved sustainability of the banana industry. EST hosts the Secretariat of the WBF, which coordinates and facilitates dialogue, activities and the overall operations of the World Banana Forum.

The Working Group 03 of the WBF on Labour Rights (WG03) aims to contribute to a better understanding of labour rights issues in the banana industry and foster development of a roadmap and joint global actions towards decent work in the sector. Addressing labour rights issues in the banana industry has become increasingly important. The increasing predominance of certifications and forthcoming mandatory human rights supply chain due diligence legislations has an impact on accessibility to international markets. Safeguarding the health and wellbeing of workers; enabling living wages & living income; preventing child labour; ensuring the right of freedom of association and collective bargaining, and facilitating gender equity within the banana industry is essential in working towards a more economically and socially sustainable industry. To ensure a gender mainstreaming approach within the WBF, and further allow a space for addressing the specific needs and priorities of women workers, the WG03 also established the Task Force on Gender Equity (GE-TF). The Working Group 2 of the WBF on Distribution of Value (WG02) focuses on ensuring an economically sustainable banana industry, with a particular focus on enabling a fair distribution of value along global banana supply chains. The WG03 and WG02 provide a space for knowledge sharing, facilitating multi-stakeholder dialogue and enabling collective action on social and economic issues in the industry.

**Reporting Lines**

The Consultant will report directly to the Secretary of the WBF.

**Technical Focus**

Specific areas of technical support would include: multi-stakeholder working group facilitation; global trade; social and economic statistics; international efforts on labour rights; sustainable costs of production; living incomes/wages; due diligence; human rights issues; responsible business conduct; quantitative and qualitative research; analysis and policy advice, gender equity.

**Tasks and responsibilities**

The generic functions for the profile include, but are not limited to, the following:

- Provide support to the operations of the World Banana Forum’s Working Group 03 on Labour Rights (WG03) and Task Force on Gender Equity (GE-TF) - as well as Working Group 02 on Distribution of Value (WG02), where necessary - including in the implementation of their work plans, projects, activities, as well as their meeting reporting;
