The **European University Institute** (EUI) at a glance:

- an **international organisation** set up in 1972;
- a research university focusing exclusively on **postgraduate**, **doctoral** and **post-doctoral studies**, and

The Institute also hosts the Historical Archives of the European Union.

The Robert Schuman Centre for Advanced Studies (RSCAS) is an inter-disciplinary research centre at the
heart of the European University Institute (EUI). It was established in 1992 to complement the four EUI
disciplinary departments (Economics, History and Civilization, Law, Political and Social Sciences) with the aim
to be involved in both basic and policy research, collaborate with other centres of excellence in Europe,
provide opportunities for young scholars and promote dialogue with the world of practice. The Centre’s goal is
to maintain an environment and support structure that fosters intellectual curiosity and excellent research. The
research agenda of the Centre is currently guided by three major themes: Integration, Governance and
Democracy; Regulating Markets and Governing Money; and 21st Century World Politics and Europe.

**Support for more Robust, Effective and Democratic Global Governance**.

The research project “_Transforming and Defending Multilateralism: European _
- Union Support for more Robust, Effective and Democratic Global Governance” _
- (_ENSURED, 2023-2026) is based on the observation that the European Union
(EU) and its members have long been key supporters of global governance. Yet
the rules-based international order and multilateralism are widely believed to be in
crisis. The emerging powers and populist forces have contested and put demands
on global governance often resulting in a gridlock of international cooperation. The
Russian war in Ukraine will likely further undermine the ability to address global
problems.

It studies how the EU and its members, in a contested world in transition, can
transform and defend global governance to make it more robust, effective and
democratic. It develops a conceptual framework on global governance
transformation. It outlines a triangular dilemma in which the EU and its members
must make choices between the robustness, effectiveness and democracy of
global governance. It also considers, in this respect, different scenarios for
multilateralism in a contested world in transition.

ENSURED is a project that includes 14 universities, think tanks and civil society
partners from Belgium, Czech Republic, Estonia, Germany, Italy, The Netherlands
as well as Brazil, China, India, South Africa, and the US. Through case studies of
five policy areas, a quantitative analysis and expert survey, ENSURED empirically
assesses and compares the unexploited potential for global governance
transformation. Based on this empirical analysis, ENSURED provides support for
the EU and its members to lead the transformation and defence of multilateralism.
ENSURED aims at advancing our knowledge about global governance
transformation and provides the EU and its members with the tools to navigate a
world in transition.

**Job description **The research fellow will carry out research work in an independent manner and
collaborate on the research work of the project. The research assistant will provide
research assistance to the Project Director(s).

Main tasks include:

- Developing, designing and conducting scientific and policy research in the

field of multilateral arrangements and the EU;
- Contributing to data collection, database management, and data analysis;_ _
- Contributing to the drafting of two policy reports (one on intersecting

challenges & global governance complexity and another one on
reconceptualizing multilateralism in the emerging multipolar global
system);_ _
- Contributing to the conceptual framework of the research project;_ _
- Coordinating the outreach activities and relations with academic and

institutional partners.
