Position Overview: The Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia is seeking outstanding candidates for its PhD program in collaboration with the Open University, focusing on innovative research in Health, Sustainable, and Human Technologies.
Admission Requirements:
- A Master's degree equivalent to a 4/5-year undergraduate MSc/MChem/Meng-style degree or a second-level University degree in Italy.

Project Title: Development of implantable neuroelectronic sensing and actuating devices for closed-loop neuro-robotic prosthetics and electroceuticals.
Research Background: The project aims to create a closed-loop neuroelectronic platform utilizing advanced dense neural probes based on CMOS technology. This technology significantly enhances the recording capabilities of brain-machine interfaces (BMIs). Current devices lack the ability to electrically stimulate neural activity, and this project will address that gap by developing bi-directional high-resolution neural interfacing systems.
Project Goals: The primary objective is to design and implement a neuroelectronic platform featuring fully bi-directional active dense neural probes. These probes will consist of numerous closely integrated electrode-pixels, adaptable for both electrical recording and stimulation. The selected candidate will collaborate with experts in CMOS circuit design, micro-/nano-structuring, neural data analysis, and in-vivo electrophysiology to create and assess a prototype platform, as well as evaluate the neuromodulation effectiveness of various electrical stimulation techniques.
Essential Qualifications:
- MSc or equivalent in Electronic/Electrical Engineering, Bioengineering, or Physics.
- Background in biophysics.
- Proficiency in programming languages such as Matlab, Python, C++, or C# for data analysis.
- Experience in electronic hardware development.
Desirable Qualifications:
- Knowledge of neuroscience.
- Experience with FPGA programming.
- Familiarity with biosensors and bioelectronics.
- Expertise in neural data analysis.
