Position Overview: The Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia is seeking outstanding candidates for its PhD program in collaboration with the Open University, focusing on innovative research in Health, Sustainable, and Human Technologies.
Admission Requirements:
- A Master's degree equivalent to a 4/5-year undergraduate MSc/MChem/Meng or a second-level University degree in Italy.
- A minimum grade of upper second class (2.1) in the UK system or 100/110 in the Italian system. Candidates with lower grades but significant achievements are encouraged to reach out to potential supervisors.

Research Opportunity: A PhD fellowship is available in a project funded by the European Commission, focusing on the development of advanced neuromodulation technologies.
Project Title: Distributed and Federated Cross-Modality Actuation through Advanced Nanomaterials and Neuromorphic Learning.
Research Background: The project addresses critical brain disorders that involve abnormal electrical activity, necessitating innovative neurotechnologies for precise detection and modulation of brain functions. The aim is to create less invasive solutions for distributed brain stimulation with high precision.
Research Focus: The selected candidate will engage in the design and development of wireless, implantable, MRI-compatible micro-devices (100x100x100 μm3). This includes studying various CMOS circuit solutions for neural activity monitoring and modulation, as well as developing micro-structuring processes for these devices. Collaboration with experts in CMOS design, micro/nano-structuring, and in-vivo electrophysiology will be integral to the research.
Essential Qualifications:
- MSc or equivalent in Electronic/Electrical Engineering, Bioengineering, or Physics.
- Experience in microelectronics or microstructuring technologies.
- Proficiency in programming languages such as Matlab, Python, C++, or C# for data analysis.
- Familiarity with electronic circuit simulations.
Desirable Qualifications:
- Background in neuroscience.
- Experience with biosensors and bioelectronics.
- Knowledge of neural interfaces.
- Expertise in (bio-)electrochemical sensors and electrochemistry.
