Job Title: Senior Forestry Officer - International Policy

Job Type: Full-time

Location: Rome, Italy

About the Job:

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) is seeking a highly qualified and experienced Senior Forestry Officer to join its Forestry Division in Rome, Italy. The successful candidate will provide technical support and expertise in international forest policy development and implementation, focusing on the United Nations Strategic Plan for Forests (UNSPF) and its six Global Forest Goals (GFGs).

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide technical support to policy dialogue and international forest policy development, including implementation of UNSPF and other forest-related global commitments;
  • Collaborate with Members of the Collaborative Partnership on Forests (CPF) and the United Nations Forum on Forests (UNFF) Secretariat to foster collaboration and coordination of work in support of UNSPF implementation;
  • Develop and maintain relationships with key stakeholders, including governments, civil society, and the private sector, to promote awareness and understanding of international forest policy issues;
  • Contribute to the development of knowledge products, including policy briefs, reports, and other materials, to support policy development and implementation;
  • Provide technical backstopping to field projects and support the development of capacity development activities within Members.

Requirements:

  • Advanced university degree in international relations, natural resources, forestry, or a related field;
  • At least five years of relevant experience in international forest or environmental policy, with a focus on policy development and implementation;
  • Working knowledge (full proficiency - level C) of English and intermediate knowledge (intermediate proficiency - level B) of another FAO official language (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian, or Spanish);
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to work effectively in a team environment;
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build and maintain relationships with a diverse range of stakeholders.

Working Arrangements:

The successful candidate will be employed on a fixed-term basis for an initial period of two years, with the possibility of extension subject to performance and availability of funds. The position is located at FAO headquarters in Rome, Italy, and requires regular attendance at meetings and events.
