Job Title: Communication Officer

The Communication Officer plays a crucial role in the Office of Communications (OCC) at the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations. This position requires a highly skilled and experienced professional to lead projects and teams, develop and implement communication strategies, and provide expert advice on communication-related issues.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Lead projects and teams to develop and implement communication strategies, plans, and programs.
  • Provide expert advice on communication-related issues, including media relations, multimedia communications, and internal corporate communication.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with internal and external stakeholders, including government officials, media representatives, and civil society organizations.
  • Manage and coordinate the development of communication materials, including press releases, media advisories, and social media content.
  • Collaborate with other departments and units to ensure effective communication and coordination.
Requirements:
  • Advanced university degree in communication, social science, journalism, political science, international relations, or a related field.
  • Seven years of relevant experience in communication, public information, international relations, web publishing, and/or social media networks.
  • Working knowledge (proficient - level C) of English and limited knowledge (intermediate - level B) of one of the other official FAO languages (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian, or Spanish).
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to work in a fast-paced environment.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively with diverse stakeholders.

Technical/Functional Skills:
  • Work experience in more than one location or area of work, particularly in field positions, is desirable.
  • Extensive experience in drafting high-quality written materials for a wide variety of audiences.
  • Demonstrated ability and experience in drafting and editing in English.
  • Very good technical affinity for media contexts, including knowledge of a wide range of multimedia, web, and digital tools.
  • Understanding of FAO policies and programs is considered a strong asset.

Extension of fixed-term appointments is based on certification of performance and availability of funds.

FAO reserves the right not to make an appointment.

Appointment will be subject to certification that the candidate is medically fit for appointment, accreditation, any residency or visa requirements, and security clearances.
